**Making Physics More Inclusive and Eliminating Exclusionary Practices in Physics**

As a gateway discipline to STEM majors and careers, physics plays a central role in deciding who does, and who doesn't, get to discover and pursue scientific careers. Technical and scientific professionals are rewarded with economic privilege and status which affords them both social and cultural power. Therefore, social justice will be realized only when the opportunity, and the choice, to excel in physics is open to all students. The culture and practices of the physics classroom reflect the culture of physics at large, which raises the question of how our professional physics communities can embrace, rather than inadvertently repel, a diverse group of academics that can help improve physics culture.  To this end, the 2021 Physics Education Research Conference will focus on defining inclusive spaces and practices. Additionally, we will explore strategies for eliminating exclusionary practices in our classrooms, research spaces, and professional organizations. We call on the community to propose sessions that will drive conversations related to these initiatives throughout PERC 2021.

The Institute of Physics and IOP Publishing, in partnership with the Chinese Physical Society (CPS) and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) are proud to have brought together the international quantum science community online for this inaugural conference.


Early career and leading researchers from universities, industry and government worldwide came together to share, learn and collaborate on the latest research and emerging areas of high interest across quantum science and technology. The broad themes covered by Quantum 2020 included:

Quantum communication;
Quantum computing and quantum simulation;
Quantum sensing, metrology and imaging;
Quantum information theory, software and algorithms;
Quantum foundations;
Quantum technology in industry.
The four-day event featured talks from world-renowned scientists, interactive poster sessions and two exciting panel discussions on the themes of Quantum Technology in Industry and Quantum Technology Programmes Around the World.

The Weyl semimetals are three-dimensional (3D) gapless topological phases with Weyl cones in the bulk band, and host massless quasiparticles known as Weyl fermions which were theorized by Hermann Weyl in the last twenties. The lattice theory constrains that Weyl cones must come in pairs, with the minimal number of cones being two. The semimetal with only two Weyl cones is an ideal Weyl semimetal (IWSM) which is the optimal platform to explore broad Weyl physics but hard to engineer in solids.
Here, we report the experimental realization of the IWSM band by synthesising for the first time a 3D spin-orbit (SO) coupling for ultracold atoms. Engineering a 3D configuration-tunable optical Raman lattice, we realize the Weyl-type SO coupling for ultracold quantum gas, with which the IWSM band is achieved with controllability. The topological Weyl points are clearly measured via the virtual slicing imaging technique in equilibrium, and further resolved in the quench dynamics, revealing the key information of the realized IWSM bands. The realization of the IWSM band opens an avenue to investigate various exotic phenomena based on the optimal Weyl semimetal platforms.
