In this talk, we present the principles for vocal and multichannel annotation of the natural communcation used in the “Russian Pear Chats &amp; Stories” corpus (RUPEX). RUPEX consists of 40 interaction sessions (8 to 41 min each, four interlocutors in each); in total, 160 participants (18 to 36 years old), appr.160,000 words; interaction takes place in partly structured communicative situation with established roles for the interlocutors; the communication is unrestricted and mostly unsupervised; it is centered around the contents of W. Chafe’s “Pear Film”. The main objective is to document oral communication as an interaction that simultaniously operates via multiple channels: the segmental verbal channel, the non-segmental prosodic channel, the gaze channel (eyes’ movements), as well as via movements of other body parts (face, head, hands, arms, torso). The data is represented (a) in the form of audio and video recordings (high-frequency frontal cameras were used), as well as eye-movement recordings from eye tracker glasses worn by participants; and (b) in the form of annotation files. The main challenge is to develop and integrate vocal and kinetic (oculomotor, manual, cephalic etc.) annotation, and to prove its validity for Russian data. So far, the vocal annotation is the most comprehensive as it embraces the segmentation of the speech flow into units of various levels: filled and unfilled pauses, words, elementary discourse units (EDUs), illocutionary chains etc. An EDU is defined as a minimal chunk of spoken discourse, i.e. a terminal node in discourse structure represented through semantically definable relationships. In terms of prosodic structure, it is realized as a single prosodic domain grouped around its primary accent with perceived maximal prominence. Special annotation conventions are developed to register pitch movements associated with accents, discourse functions of the EDUs, speech disfluencies and many other vocal details.
Similar principles apply for non-vocal channels, where units of segmentation are also defined and their properties annotated. For each unit, its precise time boundaries are indicated. While annotation is carried out using various software (Praat and MS Word for vocal phenomena, Tobii Pro Glasses Analyzer for eye gaze, ELAN for other kinetic behavior), it is further converted into a unified format in ELAN and in SQL tables. A web search engine has also been developed using SQL data that allows to search for units with user-defined properties.

Russian oral discourse through the lens of a multichannel corpus

The great event is jointly organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP). 

As in previous years, the program of the conference includes a poster session, tutorials, workshops and demonstrations in addition to the main conference.


We were able to keep the registration fees similar to those charged for the virtual ACL 2020. The one fee allows attendance at the main conference and any/all tutorials and workshops. China’s 7th National Census of 2020 shows that the 60-year-old aging population reaches 264 million by 2021. Of 264 million, 190 million is 65 years old or above. Human ageing is unidirectional, and the time arrow always irreversibly points to death. Death terminates indescriminately the language capabilities individual speakers accumulate over the lifespan. This paper explores the interaction between ageing and language capabilities over the last phase of one’s lifespan, viz. from age 60 to the time of death. For this purpose, the Multimodal Corpora of Gerontic Discourse (MCGD) Project was piloted in the years 2003-2010, and became a national project funded by the Chinese Funding Council for Humanities in 2020. 
This paper focuses on two central issues of MCGD: (1) sampling and representativeness; (2) segmentation and annotation. Demography-based random sampling is ideal but practically infeasible. 5-year birth cohort sampling is adopted as the second best method. Simulative modeling of a whole person, based on the Oneness Principle of Nature and Man of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, is presented as a governing principle for segmentation and annotation. MCGD comprises the following activity types: 
(1) Clinic cognitive evaluation tests, including MSE, MoCA, etc. 
(2) Festive activities: birthday parties, festival gatherings, etc. 
(3) Interviews: a. patterns of current life; b. experience of fraud victims; 
(4) Games (proto experimental):cooking, the Tower of London/Hanoi; 
(5) Retrospective narration of daily events. 

Complementary data include (1) End-of-life interviews with close relatives; (2) Funerals; (3) Tomb visits. All these activities are audio-video recorded. Demonstrations are provided to show how audio-video signals are segmented and annotated.

Segmenting and annotating multimodal corpus: inspirations and principles from the traditional Chinese medicine

MIDIA (acronimo di Morfologia dell’Italiano in DIAcronia) è un corpus diacronico bilanciato della lingua italiana che comprende testi che vanno dall’inizio del XIII alla prima metà del XX secolo, per circa 7,5 milioni di occorrenze, liberamente consultabile in rete dal settembre 2014. Realizzato grazie a un finanziamento PRIN del 2009, MIDIA è accessibile all’indirizzo http://www.corpusmidia.unito.it/ e si caratterizza rispetto ad altri corpora in rete per la scansione temporale, la tipologia di testi, la lemmatizzazione. 
Nel nostro intervento vogliamo illustrare (a integrazione e completamento dei contributi raccolti in D’Achille/Grossmann 2017) la concezione e la realizzazione di MIDIA, ma soprattutto fornire alcuni spunti di riflessione riguardanti esempi di impiego di MIDIA per ricerche di tipo morfologico e sintattico. 
Per quanto riguarda la concezione del corpus, parleremo in particolare delle motivazioni che hanno determinato la distinzione in cinque periodi cronologici (1. Dall’inizio del Duecento al 1375; 2. dal 1376 al 1532; 3. dal 1533 al 1691; 4. dal 1692 al 1840; 5. dal 1841 al 1947), scanditi da fatti di storia linguistica, letteraria e culturale che possono essere considerati come punti di svolta nella storia della lingua italiana, e in sette generi testuali (1. testi espositivi; 2. testi giuridico-amministrativi; 3. testi personali; 4. poesia; 5. prosa letteraria; 6. testi scientifici; 7. teatro, oratoria, mimesi dialogica). 
Per quanto riguarda la realizzazione, ci soffermeremo sulla scelta dei criteri di annotazione e di lemmatizzazione richiesti da un corpus così eterogeneo, e sugli interventi di revisione, che abbiano considerato utili al fine di un migliore utilizzo e interrogazione del corpus. 
Forniremo infine alcuni esempi degli impieghi di MIDIA, che, concepito per studi di morfologia derivazionale in prospettiva diacronica (ancora privi di un testo di riferimento paragonabile a Grossmann/Rainer 2004), può essere anche fruito per lo studio della morfologia flessiva, del
lessico e delle costruzioni. 
La lemmatizzazione e l’indicazione delle parti del discorso si basano sul programma Tree-Tagger. Per poter fornire una analisi automatica quanto più possibile adeguata alle variazioni dipendenti dai diversi generi linguistici e dall’estensione temporale dei testi presenti nel corpus, è stato necessario predisporre un file di parametri che modifica e integra con più di 200.000 forme annotate quello realizzato da Marco Baroni per la lingua italiana contemporanea (https://docs.sslmit.unibo.it/doku.php?id=resources:morph-it). 
Oltre all’aggiunta di forme, la revisione del file di parametri ha determinato una ridefinizione dei criteri di lemmatizzazione (che tiene conto della ricca polimorfia caratteristica della storia della lingua italiana) e una parziale modifica (rispetto a quella del file di partenza) della lista delle parti del discorso utilizzate in MIDIA. I risultati automatici del PoS tagging sono stati analizzati in fase di post-elaborazione, e gli errori più frequenti di assegnazione di parte del discorso o di lemmatizzazione sono stati corretti attraverso una procedura manuale mirata. 
L’utilizzo del corpus ha evidenziato la necessità di alcune piccole modifiche nel sistema di interrogazione e nella sua presentazione, come pure dell’aggiunta di alcuni testi al fine di ottenere un migliore bilanciamento del corpus, e anche della correzione di alcuni errori materiali. Le possibilità offerte da MIDIA saranno messe in luce grazie all’illustrazione dei risultati di due ricerche che abbiamo condotto specificamente per quest’occasione: una di carattere propriamente morfologico e una di tipo sintattico. Per la morfologia derivativa, analizzeremo la concorrenza tra i diversi prefissi privativi; per la sintassi la diffusione e lo sviluppo della perifrasi stare + gerundio in rapporto a varie altre perifrasi (tra cui in particolare stare a + infinito e stare per + infinito).

Il corpus MIDIA: concezione, realizzazione, impieghi

La relazione intende presentare le principali caratteristiche e alcuni risultati preliminari relativi alla realizzazione del corpus IMPAQTS che, insieme alla sua annotazione pragmatica per impliciti linguistici, è il principale obiettivo del PRIN IMPAQTS (Implicit Manipulation in Politics – Quantitatively Assessing the Tendentiousness of Speeches, codice: 2017STJCE9).
Il corpus IMPAQTS, che verrà completato e pubblicato entro il 2022, conterrà circa 1500 discorsi pronunciati da politici italiani nella storia della Repubblica, per un totale di circa 2 milioni di parole. Nell’interfaccia web di consultazione, le trascrizioni dei discorsi risulteranno allineate enunciato per enunciato al video corrispondente, salvo i casi in cui il video non esista o non sia reperibile. Tutti i discorsi saranno annotati pragmaticamente (secondo le categorie descritte sotto) da una terna di annotati indipendenti. Al momento della stesura dell’abstract (1 febbraio 2021), il corpus consta di 571 discorsi trascritti e allineati. di cui 381 già annotati da tre annotatori indipendenti e prodotti in versione definitiva. 
I criteri di bilanciamento del corpus – in ordine gerarchico – sono i seguenti: 
- Numero di discorsi per politico (10 discorsi ciascuno); 
- Scansione temporale (circa 170 discorsi dal 1946 al 1972, circa 330 discorsi dal 1973 al 1993, circa 1000 discorsi dal 1994 a oggi, con bilanciamento 1: 2: 6); 
- Politici più significativi per ognuno dei tre slot temporali, bilanciati per orientamento politico e sesso (17 per il primo blocco, 33 per il secondo e 100 per il terzo); 
- Tipo di discorsi (per ogni politico, 4 discorsi enunciati in assemblee ufficiali, 3 in occasione di comizi, 2 dichiarazioni rilasciate in conferenza stampa, alla televisione o online). 

Attraverso l’interfaccia web dedicata, il corpus sarà interrogabile rispetto a una serie di metadati e alle categorie di implicito oggetto dell’annotazione. I metadati includono le informazioni sociolinguistiche relative ai parlanti e le informazioni relative al discorso (canale, pubblico, struttura, argomento e situazione politica). Le categorie di implicito oggetto dell’annotazione comprendono invece: 
- Presupposizioni, con la specificazione del tipo di attivatore (es. presupposizioni da descrizione definita, presupposizioni da clausola subordinata, ecc.). 
- Implicature, distinte in convenzionali, conversazionali generalizzate e conversazionali particolarizzate. 
- Topicalizzazioni, con la specificazione del tipo di attivatore (prosodico o sintattico). 
- Vaghezza, distinta in tipo semantico e sintattico. 

Il corpus sarà naturalmente consultabile anche oscurando l’annotazione pragmatica, e costituirà dunque una risorsa utile per molti tipi di ricerche linguistiche.
