The technology enabling Extended Reality (XR), the combination of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), is rapidly advancing where just a few years ago the primary challenge revolved around the ability to render graphics at framerates and latencies needed for virtual reality. In 2021, with many powerful graphics cards “VR Ready” the next set of challenges will remarkably broaden the potential of XR. While GPU power will continue to increase well into the future, the major driver in 2021 will come from the profound impact of combining the idea of disaggregated graphics or “split-rendering” from the cloud and All-In-One (AIO) devices. Powered by ease of use and low cost, AIOs are fundamentally changing the XR adoption curve. The emergent trend of coupling AIOs with the increasing availability of edge computing via high performance networks will reinvent “where” XR is served from. For instance, training applications, requiring more realistic environments, will move from on-headset compute to datacenter servers inside low-latency private networks. The tools enabling XR experiences to be driven from the datacenter will also enable the market to move more and more use cases to the Cloud, including collaborative design, maintenance, and a variety of healthcare scenarios.

AAAI-23 is the Thirty-Seventh AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The theme of this conference is to create collaborative bridges within and beyond AI. The technical exchange is a two day event held online this year due to COVID-19. The technical exchange is unclassified and we welcome participation from the Navy, DoD as well as from industry and academia. 

The goals of TEAR 3M are:

*  To connect AR researchers with experts in DOD to learn about needs and requirements

*  To build and strengthen collaborations within the DOD research community

Futures Intelligence: 5 Tech Trends in Defense/Military in 2021 & Beyond

This Navy ManTech project, funded under ONR contract N00014-15-D-5003, focuses on the development of a head-mounted display (HMD) and high-dynamic-range (HDR) camera system to improve visualization for manual welding. We selected and integrated HDR cameras with a variety of head-mounted displays and used real-time image processing to produce a variety of working prototypes. In coordination with a subcontractor, we preformed evaluations in Pascagoula, MS.

Guided by the results of shipyard testing and additional optical evaluation, we selected and evaluated a number of candidate cameras and HMDs based on dynamic range, resolution, frame rate, latency, and suitability for wearing over an extended time period. The final system emphasizes visibility of the weld pool while also providing situational context to the welder.

Augmented Visualization for Manual Welding

"Fantasmo is mapping the planet in 3D. Fantasmo is a foundational layer that many smart city applications require in order to proliferate. Today, Fantasmo's solutions are being scaled with micromobility operators, but that same platform is useful for autonomous systems, accessibility, augmented reality, defense and security, and digital twin systems. Digital twins alone are not enough to bring these next-generation spatial applications into the real world. Fantasmo's digital twin solutions not only enable standard simulation and monitoring but are used in real-time by emerging applications to position themselves with sub-meter accuracy both indoors and out in order to solve critical obstacles.

This presentation will focus on the types of applications that can leverage digital twins today and the applications and technology that are making digital twin creation and maintenance scalable today. "

Fantasmo: Platform for Digital Twins and GPS-denied PNT

Extended reality (XR) tools and techniques are used throughout the DoD for training, maintenance, and complex data exploration. While XR offers novel ways to access and explore high-value 3D data, it may also attract attention from adversaries interested in gaining access to that data or disrupting training and maintenance activities. Automated security testing could help researchers and engineers discover and mitigate vulnerabilities earlier in the development cycle. Our work demonstrates security test scenarios for XR applications that trace two paths; the happy path (simulating expected, well-behaved use) and the unhappy path (simulating unintended, neglectful, or malicious use). By connecting XR threat models to open source automated testing tools, this work aims to build collaboration between XR and cybersecurity research teams.

Into the Sythetic Future

5G is not just a technology that is being rolled out to consumers by public carriers. 5G represents a new type of network and it offers new opportunities for private deployments as well. It is common knowledge that 5G networks enable lower latency and higher bandwidth, but 5G is also key in enabling edge computing and provides greater control over how network traffic is prioritized and secured. But, at its core 5G is simply a way of connecting and transporting data - as always, the magic happens at the application layer. The big question quickly becomes; “what is possible with more secure, powerful, and flexible networks?” When thinking of rich applications such as augmented and virtual reality training and maintenance solutions, the opportunities are substantial and transformational.
