Deep convolutional neural networks are widely used
to learn feature spaces for image classification tasks. We propose
cam-softmax, a generalisation of the final layer activations and
softmax function, that encourages deep feature spaces to exhibit
high intra-class compactness and high inter-class separability.
We provide an algorithm to automatically adapt the method’s
main hyperparameter so that it gradually diverges from the
standard activations and softmax method during training. We
report experiments using CASIA-Webface, LFW, and YTF face
datasets demonstrating that cam-softmax leads to representations
well suited to open-set face recognition and face pair matching.
Furthermore, we provide empirical evidence that cam-softmax
provides some robustness to class labelling errors in training
data, making it of potential use for deep learning from large
datasets with poorly verified labels.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks:

We design an interpretable network model by introducing explainable components into a Deep Neural Network (DNN). We substituted the first kernels of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a ResNet-50 with the well-known edge detecting filters such as Sobel, Prewitt, and other filters. Each filters' relative importance scores are measured with a variant of Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) method proposed by Bach et al. Since the effects of the edge detecting filters are well understood, our model provides three different scores to explain individual predictions: the scores with respect to (1) colors, (2) edge filters, and (3) pixels of the image. Our method provides more tools to analyze the predictions by highlighting the location of important edges and colors in the images. Furthermore, the general features of a category can be shown in our scores as well as individual predictions. At the same time, the model does not degrade performances on MNIST, Fruit360, and ImageNet datasets.

Color, Edge, and Pixel-wise Explanation of Predictions Based on Interpretable Neural Network Model

Facial makeup style transfer is an extremely challenging sub-field of image-to-image-translation. Due to this difficulty, state-of-the-art results are mostly reliant on the Face Parsing Algorithm, which segments a face into parts in order to easily extract makeup features. However, we find that this algorithm can only work well on
high-definition images where facial features can be accurately extracted. Faces in many real-world photos, such as those including a large background or multiple people, are typically of low-resolution, which considerably hinders state-of-the-art algorithms. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end holistic approach to effectively
transfer makeup styles between two low-resolution images. The idea is built upon a novel weighted multi-scale spatial attention module, which identifies salient pixel regions on low-resolution images in multiple scales, and uses channel attention to determine the most effective attention map. This design provides two benefits: low-resolution images are usually blurry to different extents, so a multi-scale architecture can select the most effective convolution kernel size to implement spatial attention; makeup is applied on both a macro-level (foundation, fake tan) and a micro-level (eyeliner, lipstick) so different scales can excel in extracting different makeup features. We develop an Augmented CycleGAN network that embeds our attention modules at selected layers to most effectively transfer makeup. We test our system with the FBD data set, which consists of many low-resolution facial images, and demonstrates that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods, particularly in transferring makeup for blurry images and partially occluded images.

Makeup Style Transfer on Low-Quality Images with Weighted Multi-Scale Attention

The paper addresses the problem of recognition of actions in video with low inter-class variability such as Table Tennis strokes. Two stream, "twin" convolutional neural networks are used with 3D convolutions both on RGB data and optical flow. Actions are recognized by classification of temporal windows. We introduce 3D attention modules and examine their impact on classification efficiency. In the context of the study of sportsmen performances, a corpus of the particular actions of table tennis strokes is considered. The use of attention blocks in the network speeds up the training step and improves the classification scores up to 5\% with our twin model. We visualize the impact on the obtained features and notice correlation between attention and player movements and position. Score comparison of state-of-the-art action classification method and proposed approach with attentional blocks is performed on the corpus. Proposed model with attention blocks outperforms previous model without them and our baseline.

3D attention mechanism for fine-grained classification of table tennis strokes using a Twin Spatio-Temporal Convolutional Neural Networks

An input space is a set of all the possible inputs for a neural network. An element or a group of elements in the input space can easily be understood by projecting them on their original forms. Even though Piece-wise Linear Neural Networks (PLNNs) are a nonlinear system in general, a PLNN can also be expressed in terms of linear constraints because the Rectified Linear Units (ReLU) function is a piece-wise linear function. A PLNN divides the input space into disjoint linear regions. We proved that all components of the outputs are continuous at the boundary between two different adjacent regions. This continuity implies that the boundary corresponding to a unit itself should be continuous regardless of the regions. Furthermore, we also obtained the boundaries of a single-class region, which has the same predicted classes in the interior of the region. Finally, we suggested that the point-wise robustness of a neural network can be calculated by investigating the boundaries of linear regions and the single-class regions. We obtained adversarial examples in which Euclidean distances from original inputs are less than 0.01 pixels.

Boundaries of Single-Class Regions in the Input Space of Piece-Wise Linear Neural Networks

This paper tackles the problem of human action recognition, defined as classifying which action is displayed in a trimmed sequence, from skeletal data. Albeit state-of-the-art approaches designed for this application are all supervised, in this paper we pursue a more challenging direction: solving the problem with unsupervised learning. To this end, we propose a novel subspace clustering method, which exploits covariance matrix to enhance the action’s discriminability and a timestamp pruning approach that allow us to better handle the temporal dimension of the data. Through a broad experimental validation, we show that our computational pipeline surpasses existing unsupervised approaches but also can result in favorable performances as compared to the supervised methods.

Subspace Clustering for Action Recognition with Covariance Representations and Temporal Pruning

As part of the development of an educational tool that can help students achieve fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) through independent and interactive practice with immediate feedback, this paper introduces a near real-time system to recognize grammatical errors in continuous signing videos without necessarily identifying the entire sequence of signs. Our system automatically recognizes if a performance of ASL sentences contains grammatical errors made by ASL students. We first recognize the ASL grammatical elements including both manual gestures and nonmanual signals independently from multiple modalities (i.e. hand gestures, facial expressions, and head movements) by 3D-ResNet networks. Then the temporal boundaries of grammatical elements from different modalities are examined to detect ASL grammatical mistakes by using a sliding window-based approach. We have collected a dataset of continuous sign language, ASL-HW-RGBD, covering different aspects of ASL grammars for training and testing. Our system is able to recognize grammatical elements on ASL-HW-RGBD from manual gestures, facial expressions, and head movements and successfully detect 8 ASL grammatical mistakes.

Recognizing American Sign Language Nonmanual Signal Grammar Errors in Continuous Videos

We present a novel approach of 2D to 3D transfer learning for semantic segmentation based on mapping pre-trained 2D convolutional neural network weights into planar 3D kernels. Results were evaluated using a public dataset for multiple sclerosis lesion segmentation utilizing solely MRI Flair sequence without brain extraction. Complete source code is available under an open-source license.

Planar 3D Transfer Learning for End to End Unimodal MRI Unbalanced Data Segmentation

Multi-scale feature representation is a common strategy to handle the scale variation in pedestrian detection. Existing methods simply utilize the convolutional pyramidal features for multi-scale representation. However, they rarely pay attention to the differences among different feature scales and extract multi-scale features from a single feature map, which may make the detectors sensitive to scale-variance in multi-scale pedestrian detection. In this paper, we introduce a bidirectional feature enhancement module (BFEM) to augment the semantic information of low-level features and the localization information of high-level features. In addition, we propose a prior-based receptive field block (PRFB) for multi-scale pedestrian feature extraction, where the receptive field is closer to the aspect ratio of the pedestrian target. Consequently, it is less affected by the surrounding background when extracting features. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the CityPersons and Caltech datasets.

PRF-Ped: Multi-scale Pedestrian Detector with Prior-based Receptive Field


Studying the spatial organization of objects in images is fundamental to increase both the understanding of a sensed scene and the explainability of the perceived similarity between images. This leads to the fundamental problem of handling spatial relations: given two objects depicted in an image, or two parts in an object, how to extract and describe efficiently their spatial configuration? Dedicated descriptors already exist for this task, like the efficient force histogram. In this article, we introduce the Force Banner, which extends it to two dimensions by using a panel of forces (attraction and repulsion), so as to benefit from more expressiveness and to model rich spatial information. This descriptor can be used as an intermediate representation of the image dedicated to the spatial configuration, and feed a classical 2D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to benefit from their powerful performances. As an illustration of this, we used it to solve a classification problem aiming to discriminate simple spatial relations, but with variable configuration complexities. Experimental results obtained on datasets of images with various shapes highlight the interest of this approach, in particular for complex spatial configurations.

Force Banner for the recognition of spatial relations


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.
