**Abstract:**

 A long-standing hypothesis is that children exhibit high fidelity imitative copying of a model’s actions, whereas nonhuman apes focus only on results (emulation). This study explores this hypothesis by employing eye-tracking technology to compare the attentional foci of apes and human children during observational learning of novel tool-use. Subjects are presented with video demonstrations of a conspecific solving a two-action tool-use task ('pan-pipes'), after which the fidelity of their own attempts are compared.  Video displays feature both wide and close-up views displaying different elements of the task including the conspecific's face, body, hand and tool movements, specific parts of the apparatus moved, and the reward released. This experimental setup allows for an in-depth analysis of where subjects direct their attention during learning and whether they anticipate the demonstrator's actions over repeated presentations. The study thus tests hypotheses regarding the similarity or difference in attentional patterns between apes and children and potential correlations between these patterns and task performance. We will examine species differences and the relationship between attention patterns and task success. This research contributes to our understanding of social learning processes across species, extending previous findings on imitation and emulation in apes and children.

Introduction. This poster celebrates advances in the study of culture in non-human taxa indexed by articles appearing in the two highest profile science journals. The present century has witnessed a remarkable surge in the quality and quantity of these studies and their reception in such journals. Approach. Titles of articles on animal culture together with brief abstracts and key illustrations extracted from Nature and Science are displayed, to illustrate the range of taxa and cultural phenomena addressed. Findings. Twenty titles are available in the present century alone, a majority from just the last decade. Reports of culture cover an expanding range of species including primates, cetaceans, birds and insects. Behavioural domains are no less diverse, from mate choice to foraging techniques, vocal repertoires and migration routes. Evidence extends to gene-culture co-evolution. Implications for conservation are now under review by IUCN and UN. Conclusions. The studies collated here index the growing recognition that cultural phenomena are widespread in animals. They provide a robust and exciting platform from which to further explore the scope of culture in non-human species.

Animal Culture Studies Advance in the Pages of Nature and Science

Culture – the totality of traditions acquired in a community by social learning from others – has increasingly been found to be pervasive not only in humans but in many animals’ lives, with profound implications for comparative cognitive science as well as evolutionary biology, anthropology and conservation (Aplin, 2019; Brakes et al., 2019; Whiten, 2011; Whiten, 2017a; Whiten et al., 2017). Compared to individual learning, learning from experienced others can more safely and efficiently assimilate the wisdom already accumulated in those individuals.

The Burgeoning Reach of Social Learning and Culture in Animals’ Lives

Social learning in primates has been studied experimentally for over 120 years, yet until recently these efforts focused only on what one individual would learn from a single other. Evidence of group-wide traditions in the wild stimulated a shift in the present century to recognize the collective context of social learning, with the development of broader ‘diffusion experiments’ that have illuminated the nature and limits of transmission across communities of multiple individuals and then between them. Here we describe the results of two strands within our recent experiments that further explore the collective dimensions of culture and cumulative culture in chimpanzees. The first concerns collective innovation and cumulative culture. Exposing small communities of chimpanzees to contexts incorporating increasingly challenging, but more rewarding, tool use opportunities revealed solutions arising through the combination of different individuals’ discoveries, that spread to become shared innovations. The second strand is conformity, where experiments have yielded evidence of conformist changes from habitual techniques to alternatives displayed by a unanimous majority of others, but with a curious twist akin to quorum decision making, based on only a sample of those in the community. We discuss the implications of this array of findings in the context of related studies of both other primates and non-primate species, as well as for enhancing our understanding of the extraordinary forms that cumulative culture has taken in our own species, likely built on the foundations we can infer from studies of the primates with whom we share our most recent common ancestry.

**Dear Colleagues,**

Welcome to the 43rd Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society! 

This year’s conference brings together the latest research from all Cognitive Science and also highlights this year’s theme **Comparative Cognition: Animal Minds.** 

The program features four plenary speakers: Friederike Range (University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna), Onur Güntürkün (Ruhr University Bochum), Julia Fischer (University of Göttingen), and Erich Jarvis (The Rockefeller University). The keynotes and invited symposia showcase the broad spectrum of ideas that encompass the conference theme of comparative cognition. 

Further, the program includes the Rumelhart Prize keynote presentation by Susan Goldin-Meadow (University of Chicago), and symposia to celebrate the winner of the Elman Prize: Wei Ji Ma (New York University), the Heineken Award winner Robert Zatorre (McGill University), and the Robert J. Glushko Dissertation Prizes session.

The program committee for CogSci 2021 received 1,025 submissions, including 710 full papers, 275 member abstracts, 8 publication-based talks, as well as 15 proposals for symposia, and 17 for workshops and tutorials. After a rigorous review process, the committee selected 152 papers for oral presentation and inclusion in the conference proceedings (14.8%), 332 papers for poster presentation and inclusion in the proceedings (32.4%), and 175 papers for poster presentation with inclusion of abstracts in the proceedings (17.1%) We also selected 275 submitted member abstracts. In addition, we accepted 6 publication-based talks, 12 symposia, and 9 workshops and tutorials to make for an exciting and inclusive program.

**Plenary sessions:**
Five leading researchers give a live talk. It is like a TV show. The audience can submit a question from the chat window. Chat messages are immediately delivered to speakers and moderators.

**Q&A sessions (parallel):**
Each presenter first gives a 2-minute live lightning talk followed by an 8-minute live discussion with the audience. It uses Zoom.

**Discussion sessions:** 
The audience can approach presenters and discuss their research. The sessions are held in a dedicated room in Gathertown.
 
**Gathertown:**
It is a platform dedicated to live virtual interactions.
Gather Town is available for all participants 24 hours during the conference.
