**Abstract:**

Genocide considered as the deliberate and systematic destruction of an ethnic or religious group has been explained by cultural, cognitive or economic factors. Evolutionary explanations rely on the emergence of in-group preferences and out-group hostility driven by parochial altruism and genetic and/or cultural selection at the group level. Although these theories can account for inter-group aggression they leave unexplained the cases where genocide is directed against members of the same group and cannot explain why a particular sub-group is re-labelled as an out-group and chosen as target for genocide. I develop an evolutionary model linking motives for genocide with the egalitarianism observed in many groups of hunter-gatherers, so that both might have evolved for the same reason. Genocide is attempted to eradicate fitness-enhancing genetic or cultural mutations in the population that are perceived as not sharing the beneficial mutation with the rest of the group either by intermarriage (endogamy) and/or by sharing resources (egalitarianism). Attempts to genocidal behavior offers a chance to avoid the risk of future extinction of linages due to their relative disadvantage in adaptive fitness. An agent-based simulation of the model allows to determine the conditions under which the “genocidal gene” might evolve.

 I propose a mathematical model of cultural evolution to explain why false theories and meaning systems or maladaptive beliefs may spread and become fixed in a population while assuming that their diffusion rates are lower than their true counterparts. By combining ideas from judgment aggregation and the Condorcet Jury theorem with cultural evolution dynamics, I introduce a new epistemic stage in the cultural evolution process where culturally transmitted theories not only spread “horizontally” (across individuals in the same generation) and “vertically” (from one generation to the next), but also inside individual brains (“personal reflection process”). This occurs when a brain adopts a maladaptive theory (not received from outside) by means of internal inference from other false premise/idea that was indeed received culturally. In this context, false theories may favor the assumption of other false theories after the individuals have been exposed to true information about their logical connection, and increase their presence in the population within the normal and adaptive logical working of our brains. Using a simple stylized model and subsequent simulations I identify the parametric conditions in which false theories become universally accepted, so that the model could be tested empirically.

In this paper I depart from the traditional Price-equation formulation of multilevel selection and introduce a new theoretical approach of a multi-level selection process where phases of intra-group interactions alternate with phases of interaction among groups. I assume that a given genetic allele or cultural trait is maladaptive for individuals bearing it but increases the fitness of others in the same group (like altruism), but groups with a higher fraction of bearers of the trait have an advantage in the inter-group interaction phases and reproduce faster. Two main results are obtained that had remained somehow hidden in the traditional model: (1) For group selection to overcome the opposing effect of individual selection the key factor is the amount of “positive” variation in groups’ reproduction, not the strength of group selection per se. (2) Multilevel selection is vulnerable to invasion by mutants that inhibit the phenotypic effect of the allele or cultural trait in the intra-group phases but allow its expression in the between-group phases, in a similar process that make green beards genes unlikely to evolve. By discriminating its phenotypic effects depending on appropriate cues in both environments, the mutated trait restores the selfish behavior when it serves the individual but maintains the altruistic effect when it serves both the group and the individual. This can be interpreted as breaking the “public good” link of the original allele or trait regarding its positive effect in the inter-group competition in relation to its detrimental effects in the intra-group competition phases.

**Plenary sessions:**
Five leading researchers give a live talk. It is like a TV show. The audience can submit a question from the chat window. Chat messages are immediately delivered to speakers and moderators.

**Q&A sessions (parallel):**
Each presenter first gives a 2-minute live lightning talk followed by an 8-minute live discussion with the audience. It uses Zoom.

**Discussion sessions:** 
The audience can approach presenters and discuss their research. The sessions are held in a dedicated room in Gathertown.
 
**Gathertown:**
It is a platform dedicated to live virtual interactions.
Gather Town is available for all participants 24 hours during the conference.
