SHORT BIO

Dr Navío did her PhD in Physics in the Surface Physics Laboratory, in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics of the Autonomous University of Madrid, UAM (Spain, 11-01-2008), under the supervision of Dr MJ Capitán and Dr J Álvarez, in the group led by Prof R Miranda. During this period, Dr Navío acquired extensive knowledge in the operation of UHV equipment, as well as surface preparation, growth and characterization techniques (XPS, UPS, LEED, Auger, MBE). The subject of her thesis was the "Chemical, electronic and structural characterization of transition metal nitrides" and to complete this period, Dr Navío spent four months of predoctoral stay in Paris in the group of Dr M Gautier-Soyer, specialized in the growth and characterization of magnetic oxides, specifically cobalt ferrites. In the first post-doctoctoral period Dr Navío worked at the Freie University of Berlin (Germany, 2008) in the group of Prof Dr W Kuch. There she had the possibility to learn NEXAFS, PEEM and characterization of "switchable" molecules in metal surfaces that included several months of work in the old BESSY II synchrotron. The following two years (2009-2010), Dr Navío joined the group LCIA (nowadays ChiPS) of the University of Mons (Belgium), to work with Dr C Bittencourt in the group of the Prof R Snyders. During this period, Dr Navío was involved in several topics: WO3 films for gas sensing applications, the study of functionalized carbon nanotubes and the plasma treatment of inert surfaces for use in cell culture. After completing the foreign postdoctoral period, Dr Navío returned to her former laboratory (January 2011) to participate on the assembly and development of a new MBE-XPS chamber. Currently, Dr Navío is a researcher at Imdea Nanoscience Institute(2012) and belongs to the Division of Permanent Magnets and Applications, led by Dr A Bollero, where she works on the study of manganese based materials with the aim of obtaining rare earth free permanent magnets. In this frame and as the subject of the PhD thesis of Melek Villanueva (co-supervised by Dr. Navío and Prof. A Bollero), MnAl and MnBi ultra thin films have been explored and the obtained results have been fundamental in therecently awarded “NEXMAG”project, recognizedas Project Success Case by the M-ERA.NET Network:https://m-era.net/success-stories/new-exchange-coupled-manganese-based-magnetic-materials-nexmag. In the following months a new promising system is going to be studied: the L10-FeNi phase. This material is a very good candidate to be used in permanent magnets but till now it has been only found in meteorites. Dr Navío is co-supervising with Prof. A Bollero two PhD students: Melek Villanueva (she has defended her PhD in March 4th 2021) and Jimena Soler, who started in 2019. The subject of the thesis of Jimena Soler is in the frame of a recently started H2020 FET-OPEN project “UWIPOM2”Ref. 857654, where she will develop the magnet (based in NdFeB) of the micromagnetic structurethat will be used as a first building block able to power future health care micro-robots in microsurgery applications. Dr Navío is the author of 41papers (index h = 20), has participated in 61 conferences, 18 research programs and collaborated in contracts with the industry (Höganäs AB, CilBiotech and Aernnova).
