As Scholarly Communications is amidst a transition to Open Science – resulting in the more widespread availability of open content, data and infrastructure - the scientific community itself become increasingly adept at engaging with 'open'. Two examples of 'open infrastructure services' are the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) and the OAPEN Library – both running on an open source version of DSpace with its metadata freely available under CC 0. The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) indexes over 60,000 open access books, whereas the OAPEN Library provides a structured and premium hosting environment for over 25,000 OA books.

Leveraging an open infrastructure and tapping into an open service: examples of established workflows and approaches for open access books

The transition to open access for scholarly content such as books and journals enables research to be widely and freely available to readers worldwide. As publishers, funders, libraries and researchers are increasingly engaged in making scholarly books available open access (OA), how do these OA versions find their way through the supply chain for scholarly books? Which, for a large part, is built around print and digital (non-OA) books. As part of this session we will hear from the OAPEN & Thoth team – two open metadata service providers that are part of the Open Book Collective and work together to increase discoverability for open access books. Jointly, we’ll take a closer look at the OA ebook supply chain and how these solutions contribute to bringing OA books to their readers, the challenges along the way and how we can ensure, collectively, that OA books are as (or more) discoverable compared to their closed counterparts.

The Open Access Books Network (OABN) is a relatively new kid on the block, but it punches above its weight. Our most significant series so far was the Voices from the OA Books Community, devoted to exploring different aspects of policy for OA books.

During the heated discussions, what were the main areas of consensus and which topics emerged as especially controversial? Which aspects of OA policy for books perplexed the community and provoked more questions than answers? In this session we will hear from session leaders and participants as they paint a nuanced picture of a necessary but complex endeavour: how to directly engage the OA books community in developing policies that will materially affect its future.

With momentum for Open Access (OA) books on the rise, there have been calls by various stakeholders to open up the library and develop OA book infrastructures to further support the transition to OA for books. One of the key infrastructures for OA books is the OAPEN Library that helps stakeholders tracking usage of OA books. During this session we will show how OAPEN can provide usage data for different stakeholders and seek to explore additional kinds of data that libraries may find useful to inform their OA book strategies and decision-making processes to support OA book publishing initiatives.

Tracking the open access book: what data do research institutions and libraries need in support of their strategies around open access books?

The landscape is evolving rapidly for open access books. In 2020 continued effort took place to transition to open in order to create sustainable and meaningful change. As part of this work, two open access toolkits were developed -- one by the OAPEN Foundation and one by Jisc -- to offer practical support and guidance to the community. The OAPEN Open Access Books Toolkit aims to help authors better understand OA for books, increase trust in OA book publishing, provide reliable and easy-to-find answers to questions from authors. The Jisc open access toolkit aims to support New University Presses and library-led publishing. The toolkit includes advice and guidance on all aspects of the publications workflow. 
The two toolkits are free-to-access and include articles, each written by an international group of experts. They have been developed in parallel in order to complement each other and to give relevant information and consistent information to their communities. These two toolkits offer individuals and organisations with practical guides, tools, expert information and answers to many questions - enabling their communities to thrive. This session will give a presentation of the two toolkits and also touches upon the lessons we have learned since the launch of the toolkits, challenges we faced along the way, their impact and future plans.
