Studies have shown that relaxing music can lower a patient’s breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure by releasing stress or anxiety and promoting relaxation [1,2]. Based on the successful development of our magnetic respiratory monitoring technology for advanced healthcare [3], in this study we attempt to examine how the breathing pattern of a patient changes when the patient sleeps with and without a favorite music in the background. We observed that during sleep mode with music, the patient breathed more regularly and slowly (11 times per minute) compared to sleep without music (14 times per minute) and wake mode (17 times per minute). This indicated that the relaxing music helped the patient to relax and sleep better. Remarkably, while the abnormal breathing feature was observed at a certain time for all states (wake-up and sleep modes with and without music), the breathing pattern became more regular in the case of sleep with the relaxing music. Furthermore, we designed a musical biofeedback for breathing regulation. In this design, the respiratory motion of the patient was tracked and interpreted as a real-time variable for tempo adjustment to a stored musical file. The patient was able to adjust breathing to synchronize with a separate accompaniment line. When the breathing was regular and at the desired tempo, the resulting sound was synchronous and harmonious. These observations suggest a new possibility of integrating our magnetic respiratory monitoring technology with music to develop an innovative magnetic music therapy for Covid19 patients with breathing difficulty.

Magnetic Respiratory Monitoring Technology Based Music Therapy for Covid19 Patients: A New Perspective

Common symptoms of Corona virus 2019 (COVID-19) include: (i) shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, (ii) cough and (iii) fever. Current detectors provide limited information and possess lengthy processing time, or are physically contacted to patients. Therefore, there is an urgent need for developing contactless devices that enable early and fast detection of COVID-19 and track their growth rates in real time. In this study, we have integrated an ultra-sensitive magnetic sensor technology [1] with machine learning to develop an innovative, contactless diagnostic device that can sense the breathing symptoms of COVID-19 at multiple stages of disease progress and provide crucial information on the growth rate by patient of this deadly virus. We add predictive analytics, with the help of machine learning, to provide a good understanding of what can and cannot be said about a patient’s health condition status and a possible treatment plan, based on the available data. Figure 1a shows a tested person’s characteristic breathing pattern and how his breathing amplitude varies within 60 seconds. This “shortness of breath” feature (at 35th s and 50th s) is not detectable using a commercially available respiratory monitor. The sensor also provides an accurate measure on strength of his breath at multiple stages, as shown in Figure 1b for the normal breath – Stage I, the deepest breath – Stage II, and the intermediate/random breath – Stage III.References: [1] O. The 65th Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM 2020) was held in a virtual form. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its associated uncertainty about international travel and the ability to gather in large groups, meant that the Steering Committee decided to cancel the face-to-face meeting that had been planned in Palm Beach, Florida November 2-6, 2020.

We were reluctant to give up the benefits of meeting face-to-face, and know that shifting to a virtual conference is a significant change for this community. Nevertheless, we are first and foremost concerned about the health and safety of all our Conference participants and their loved ones on returning home after travelling.
