Sign language is a visual and gestural communication system used by deaf and hearing-impaired people. Despite numerous deep learning methods proposed for automatic interpretation, a gap persists in developing applications that effectively utilize these models for assisting sign language studies and inclusion. We introduce LERMO (https://lermo.app/), a web game merging machine learning and gamification to enhance sign language fingerspelling. Inspired by Wordle™, LERMO offers an interactive word-guessing game where users can play using a video camera. We create a new dataset of labeled landmark fingerspelling and design our model to ensure optimal speed and efficiency to run on a web browser. We survey approximately 40 users, which find LERMO user-friendly and innovative. From those, 95% believe LERMO could be used to enhance fingerspelling skills.

Are Foundation Models the Future of AI?

Recent research on Convolutional Neural Networks focuses on how to create models with a reduced number of parameters and a smaller storage size while keeping the model's ability to perform its task, allowing the use of the best CNN for automating tasks in limited devices, with reduced processing power, memory, or energy consumption constraints. There are many different approaches in the literature: removing parameters, reduction of the floating-point precision, creating smaller models that mimic larger models, neural architecture search (NAS), etc. With all those possibilities, it is challenging to say which approach provides a better trade-off between model reduction and performance, due to the difference between the approaches, their respective models, the benchmark datasets, or variations in training details. Therefore, this article contributes to the literature by comparing three state-of-the-art model compression approaches to reduce a well-known convolutional approach for object detection, namely YOLOv3. Our experimental analysis shows that it is possible to create a reduced version of YOLOv3 with 90% fewer parameters and still outperform the original model by pruning parameters. We also create models that require only 0.43% of the original model's inference effort.

The purpose of the AAAI conference series is to promote research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and foster scientific exchange between researchers, practitioners, scientists, students, and engineers across the entirety of AI and its affiliated disciplines. AAAI-24 will feature technical paper presentations, special tracks, invited speakers, workshops, tutorials, poster sessions, senior member presentations, competitions, and exhibit programs, and a range of other activities to be announced.

We expect for AAAI-24 to be an in-person conference – one author of all accepted papers will be expected to present work in person unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent this.

These are very-large neural networks trained on broad data at scale, which then can be used in a large variety of
downstream tasks. We will discuss the main architectures found in foundational models, the most-widely adopted training procedures, their real-world applicability, and possible societal impact. We finish by presenting the limitations of this approach and pointing to opportunities for future work in this promising research area.

KDMiLe: Technical Session 3: Neural Networks and Reinforcement Learning

The 9th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS), the 16h Encontro Nacional de Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (ENIAC), and the 12th Concurso de Teses e Dissertações em Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (CTDIAC) was held from 20 to 23 October, 2020.

BRACIS originated from the combination of the two most important scientific events in Brazil in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI): the Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence - SBIA (22 editions), and the Brazilian Symposium on Neural Networks - SBRN (13 editions). ENIAC is a national forum for researchers, practitioners, educators and students to present and discuss innovations, trends, experiences, developments and work in progress in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence. CTDIAC is a satellite event whose goals are to disseminate and award the best dissertations and theses (MSc and PhDs concluded in Brazilian universities from June 2018 to May 2020) in Artificial and Computational Intelligence areas.

In this year, the Symposium on Knowledge Discovery, Mining and Learning (KDMiLe) will be held in conjunction with BRACIS 2020. This sysposium aims at integrating researchers, practitioners, developers, students and users to present their research results, to discuss ideas, and to exchange techniques, tools, and practical experiences – related to the Data Mining and Machine Learning areas.
