Goal Recognition is the task of discerning the intended goal of an agent given a sequence of observations, whereas Plan Recognition consists of identifying the plan to achieve such intended goal. Regardless of the underlying techniques, most recognition approaches are directly affected by the quality of the available observations. In this paper, we develop neuro-symbolic recognition approaches that can combine learning and planning techniques, compensating for noise and missing observations using prior data. We evaluate our approaches in standard human-designed planning domains as well as domain models automatically learned from real-world data. Empirical experimentation shows that our approaches reliably infer goals and compute correct plans in the experimental datasets. An ablation study shows that outperform approaches that rely exclusively on the domain model, or exclusively on machine learning in problems with both noisy observations and low observability.

Robust Neuro-Symbolic Goal and Plan Recognition

Plan recognition is the task of inferring the actual plan an observed agent is performing to achieve a goal, given domain theory and a partial, possibly noisy, sequence of observations. Applications include natural language processing, elder-care, multi-agent systems, collaborative problem-solving, epistemic problems, and more. Real-world plan recognition problems impose limitations on the quality and quantity of the observations, which may be missing or faulty from silent errors in the sensors. While recent approaches to goal and plan recognition have substantially improved performance under partial observability and noisy conditions, dealing with these problems remains a challenge. Recent work on goal and plan recognition use machine learning to assist planning-based approaches in modeling domains. Such techniques yield robust models capable of accurate predictions with missing or noisy data. Thus inspired, we develop a novel approach to solve both goal and plan recognition tasks simultaneously by combining planning and machine learning techniques to mitigate problems of low and faulty observability.

Combining LSTMs and Symbolic Approaches for Robust Plan Recognition

Goal recognition aims to recognize the set of candidate goals that are compatible with the observed behavior of an agent. In this paper, we develop a method based on the operator-counting framework that efficiently computes solutions that satisfy the observations and uses the information generated to solve goal recognition tasks. Our method reasons explicitly about both partial and noisy observations: estimating uncertainty for the former, and satisfying observations given the unreliability of the sensor for the latter. We evaluate our approach empirically over a large data set, analyzing its components on how each can impact the quality of the solutions. In general, our approach is superior to previous methods in terms of agreement ratio, accuracy, and spread. Finally, our approach paves the way for new research on combinatorial optimization to solve goal recognition tasks.

An LP-Based Approach for Goal Recognition as Planning

Goal Recognition is the task of recognizing the intended goal of autonomous agents or humans by observing their behavior in an environment. Over the past years, most existing approaches to goal and plan recognition have been ignoring the need to deal with imperfections regarding the domain model that formalizes the environment where autonomous agents behave. In this work, we introduce the problem of goal recognition over imperfect domain models, and develop solution approaches that explicitly deal with two distinct types of imperfect domains models: (1) incomplete discrete domain models that have possible, rather than known, preconditions and effects in action descriptions; and (2) approximate continuous domain models, where the transition function is approximated from past observations and not well- defined. We develop novel goal recognition approaches over imperfect domains models by leveraging and adapting existing recognition approaches from the literature. Experiments and evaluation over these two types of imperfect domains models show that our novel goal recognition approaches are accurate in comparison to baseline approaches from the literature, at several levels of observability and imperfections.

CTDIAC: D1

The 9th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS), the 16h Encontro Nacional de Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (ENIAC), and the 12th Concurso de Teses e Dissertações em Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (CTDIAC) was held from 20 to 23 October, 2020.

BRACIS originated from the combination of the two most important scientific events in Brazil in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI): the Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence - SBIA (22 editions), and the Brazilian Symposium on Neural Networks - SBRN (13 editions). ENIAC is a national forum for researchers, practitioners, educators and students to present and discuss innovations, trends, experiences, developments and work in progress in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence. CTDIAC is a satellite event whose goals are to disseminate and award the best dissertations and theses (MSc and PhDs concluded in Brazilian universities from June 2018 to May 2020) in Artificial and Computational Intelligence areas.

In this year, the Symposium on Knowledge Discovery, Mining and Learning (KDMiLe) will be held in conjunction with BRACIS 2020. This sysposium aims at integrating researchers, practitioners, developers, students and users to present their research results, to discuss ideas, and to exchange techniques, tools, and practical experiences – related to the Data Mining and Machine Learning areas.
