In-context learning (ICL) has demonstrated excellent performance across various downstream NLP tasks, especially when synergized with powerful large language models (LLMs). 
Existing studies evaluate ICL methods primarily based on downstream task performance. This evaluation protocol overlooks the significant cost associated with the demonstration configuration process, i.e., tuning the demonstration as the ICL prompt. However, in this work, we point out that the evaluation protocol leads to unfair comparisons and potentially biased evaluation, because we surprisingly find the correlation between the configuration costs and task performance. Then we call for a two-dimensional evaluation paradigm that considers both of these aspects, facilitating a fairer comparison.
Finally, based on our empirical finding that the optimized demonstration on one language model generalizes across language models of different sizes, we introduce a simple yet efficient strategy that can be applied to any ICL method as a plugin, yielding a better trade-off between the two dimensions according to the proposed evaluation paradigm.

Rethinking the Evaluation of In-Context Learning for LLMs

In this paper, we extend financial sentiment analysis (FSA) to event-level since events usually serve as the subject of the sentiment in financial text. Though extracting events from the financial text may be conducive to accurate sentiment predictions, it has specialized challenges due to the lengthy and discontinuity of events in a financial text. To this end, we reconceptualize the event extraction as a classification task by designing a categorization comprising coarse-grained and fine-grained event categories. Under this setting, we formulate the Event-Level Financial Sentiment Analysis(EFSA for short) task that outputs quintuples consisting of (company, industry, coarse-grained event, fine-grained event, sentiment) from financial text. A large-scale Chinese dataset containing 12,160 news articles and 13,725 quintuples is publicized as a brand new testbed for our task. A four-hop Chain-of-Thought LLM-based approach is devised for this task. Systematically investigations are conducted on our dataset, and the empirical results demonstrate the benchmarking scores of existing methods and our proposed method can reach the current state-of-the-art. EFSA: Towards Event-Level Financial Sentiment Analysis

Retrieval-augmented methods are successful in the standard scenario where the retrieval space is sufficient; whereas in the few-shot scenario with limited retrieval space, this paper shows it is non-trivial to put them into practice. First, it is impossible to retrieve semantically similar examples by using an off-the-shelf metric and it is crucial to learn a task-specific retrieval metric; Second, our preliminary experiments demonstrate that it is difficult to optimize a plausible metric by minimizing the standard cross-entropy loss.
The in-depth analyses quantitatively show minimizing cross-entropy loss suffers from the weak supervision signals and the severe gradient vanishing issue during the optimization. To address these issues, we introduce two novel training objectives, namely EM-L and R-L, which provide more task-specific guidance to the retrieval metric by the EM algorithm and a ranking-based loss, respectively. Extensive experiments on $10$ datasets prove the superiority of the proposed retrieval augmented methods on the performance.

Retrieval-Augmented Few-shot Text Classification

In this paper, we aim to adapt the idea of retrieval-based neural approaches to the Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction (ASTE) task. Different from previous studies retrieving semantic similar neighbors, the ASTE task has its specialized challenges when adapting, i.e., the purpose includes predicting the sentiment polarity and it is usually aspect-dependent. Semantic similar neighbors with different polarities will be infeasible even counterproductive. To tackle this issue, we propose a retrieval-based neural ASTE approach, named RLI (Retrieval-based Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction via Label Interpolation), which exploits the label information of neighbors. Given an aspect-opinion term pair, we retrieve semantic similar triplets from the training corpus and interpolate their label information into the augmented representation of the target pair. The retriever is jointly trained with the whole ASTE framework, and neighbors with both similar semantics and sentiments can be recalled with the aid of this distant supervision. In addition, we design a simple yet effective pre-train method for the retriever that implicitly encodes the label similarities. Extensive experiments and analysis on two widely-used benchmarks show that the proposed model establishes a new state-of-the-art on ASTE.

Making Better Use of Training Corpus: Retrieval-based Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction via Label Interpolation

Constrained Reinforcement Learning (CRL) burgeons broad interest in recent years, which pursues maximizing long-term returns while constraining costs. Although CRL can be cast as a multi-objective optimization problem, it is still facing the key challenge that gradient-based Pareto optimization methods tend to stick to known Pareto-optimal solutions even when they yield poor returns (e.g., the safest self-driving car that never moves) or violate the constraints (e.g., the record-breaking racer that crashes the car). In this paper, we propose Gradient-adaptive Constrained Policy Optimization (GCPO for short), a novel Pareto optimization method for CRL with two adaptive gradient recalibration techniques. First, to find Pareto-optimal solutions with balanced performance over all targets, we propose gradient rebalancing which forces the agent to improve more on under-optimized objectives at every policy iteration. Second, to guarantee that the cost constraints are satisfied, we propose gradient perturbation that can temporarily sacrifice the returns for costs. Experiments on the SafetyGym benchmarks show that our method consistently outperforms previous CRL methods in reward while satisfying the constraints.

Gradient-Adaptive Pareto Optimization for Constrained Reinforcement Learning

Existing methods to measure sentence similarity are faced with two challenges: (1) labeled datasets are usually limited in size, making them insufficient to train supervised neural models; (2) there is a training-test gap for unsupervised language modeling (LM) based models to compute semantic scores between sentences, since sentence- level semantics are not explicitly modeled at training. This results in inferior performances in this task. In this work, we propose a new framework to address these two issues. The proposed framework is based on the core idea that the meaning of a sentence should be defined by its contexts, and that sentence similarity can be measured by comparing the probabilities of generating two sentences given the same context. The proposed framework is able to generate high-quality, large-scale dataset with seman- tic similarity scores between two sentences in an unsupervised manner, with which the train-test gap can be largely bridged. Extensive experiments show that the proposed framework achieves significant performance boosts over existing baselines under both the supervised and unsupervised settings across different datasets.

Sentence Similarity Based on Contexts

Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval (CLIR) aims to rank the documents written in a language different from the user's query. The intrinsic gap between different languages is an essential challenge for CLIR. In this paper, we introduce the multilingual knowledge graph (KG) to the CLIR task due to the sufficient information of entities in multiple languages. It is regarded as a â€œsilver bulletâ€ to simultaneously perform explicit alignment between queries and documents and also broaden the representations of queries. And we propose a model named CLIR with HIerarchical Knowledge Enhancement (HIKE) for our task. The proposed model encodes the textual information in queries, documents and the KG with multilingual BERT, and incorporates the KG information in the query-document matching process with a hierarchical information fusion mechanism. Particularly, HIKE first integrates the entities and their neighborhood in KG into query representations with a knowledge-level fusion, then combines the knowledge from both source and target languages to further mitigate the linguistic gap with a language-level fusion. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that HIKE achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art competitors.

Mind the Gap: Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval with Hierarchical Knowledge Enhancement

In this paper, we formulate the personalized news headline generation problem whose goal is to output a user-specific title based on both a user’s reading interests and a candidate news body to be exposed to her. To build up a benchmark for this problem, we publicize a large-scale dataset named PENS (PErsonalized News headlineS). The training set is collected from user impressions logs of Microsoft News, and the test set is manually created by hundreds of native speakers to enable a fair testbed for evaluating models in an offline mode. We propose a generic framework as a preparatory solution to our problem. At its heart, user preference is learned by leveraging the user behavioral data, and three kinds of user preference injections are proposed to personalize a text generator and establish personalized headlines. We investigate our dataset by implementing several state-of-the-art user modeling methods in our framework to demonstrate a benchmark score for the proposed dataset. PENS: A Dataset and Generic Framework for Personalized News Headline Generation

Visual storytelling is a task of creating a short story based on photo streams. Different from visual captions, stories contain not only factual descriptions, but also imaginary concepts that do not appear in the images. In this paper, we propose a novel imagine-reason-write generation framework (IRW) for visual storytelling, inspired by the logic of humans when they write the story. First, an imagine module is leveraged to learn the imaginative storyline explicitly, improving the coherence and reasonability of the generated story. Second, we employ a reason module to fully exploit the external knowledge (commonsense knowledge base) and task-specific knowledge (scene graph and event graph) with relational reasoning method based on the storyline. In this way, we can effectively capture the most informative commonsense and visual relationships among objects in images, which enhances the diversity and informativeness of the generated story. Finally, we integrate the imaginary concepts and relational knowledge to generate human-like story based on the original semantics of images. Extensive experiments on a benchmark dataset (i.e., VIST) demonstrate that the proposed IRW framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods across multiple evaluation metrics.

Imagine, Reason and Write: Visual Storytelling with Graph Knowledge and Relational Reasoning

Sequential recommender systems (SRS) have become a research hotspot in recent studies. Because of the requirement in capturing user's dynamic interests, sequential neural network based recommender models often need to be stacked with more hidden layers (e.g., up to 100 layers) compared with standard collaborative filtering methods. However, the high network latency has become the main obstacle when deploying very deep recommender models into a production environment. In this paper, we argue that the typical prediction framework that treats all users equally during the inference phase is inefficient in running time, as well as sub-optimal in accuracy. To resolve such an issue, we present SkipRec, an adaptive inference framework by learning to skip inactive hidden layers on a per-user basis. Specifically, we devise a policy network to automatically determine which layers should be retained and which layers are allowed to be skipped, so as to achieve user-specific decisions. To derive the optimal skipping policy, we propose using gumbel softmax and reinforcement learning to solve the non-differentiable problem during backpropagation. 
We perform extensive experiments on three real-world recommendation datasets, and demonstrate that SkipRec attains comparable or better accuracy with much less inference time.

A User-Adaptive Layer Selection Framework for Very Deep Sequential Recommender Models

Due to the widespread adoption of the cost-per-action(CPA) display strategy that demands a real-time conversion rate prediction(CVR), delayed feedback is becoming one of the major challenges in online advertising. As the true labels of a significant quantity of samples are only available after long delays, the observed training data are usually biased, harming the performance of models. Recent studies show integrating models with varying waiting windows to observe true labels is beneficial, but the aggregation framework remains far from reaching a consensus. In this work, we propose the Multi-Interval Screening and Synthesizing model (MISS for short) for online CVR prediction. We first design a multi-interval screening model with various output heads to produce accurate and distinctive estimates. Then a light-weight synthesizing model with an assembled training pipeline is applied to thoroughly exploit the knowledge and relationship among heads, obtaining reliable predictions. Extensive experiments on two real-world advertising datasets validate the effectiveness of our model.

# Welcome everyone to ACL 2022!

The 60th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics is taking place May 22-27, 2022 as a hybrid event, in Dublin and online. We are happy to welcome all of you to this anniversary edition with an almost 50-50 in-person and virtual participation. 
The main conference program features oral presentations, in-person and virtual posters and demo sessions, a plenary session for our best paper presentations and awards, three amazing keynote events and two new initiatives of invited talks: Spotlight Talks for Young Rising Stars (STIRS) and The Next Big Idea Talks. Posters (including Findings of ACL 2022) and demos are grouped by areas for both the in-person and the virtual sessions. For the virtual component, the talks will be on Zoom and the posters and the demos will be in GatherTown. The Student Research Workshop will have an oral session and a poster session as part of Poster Session 1. The program also features eight Tutorials and 28 Workshops.

The great event is jointly organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP). 

As in previous years, the program of the conference includes a poster session, tutorials, workshops and demonstrations in addition to the main conference.


We were able to keep the registration fees similar to those charged for the virtual ACL 2020. The one fee allows attendance at the main conference and any/all tutorials and workshops. These fees would be $125 Regular Early and $175 Regular Late; $50 Student Early and $75 Student Late. Early registration closes at midnight July 11, 2021 (Eastern Daylight Time).

The purpose of the AAAI conference series is to promote research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and foster scientific exchange between researchers, practitioners, scientists, students, and engineers across the entirety of AI and its affiliated disciplines. AAAI-24 will feature technical paper presentations, special tracks, invited speakers, workshops, tutorials, poster sessions, senior member presentations, competitions, and exhibit programs, and a range of other activities to be announced.
