Electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H2O to synthesize gas (H2 and CO mixture) is of significant interest due to established industrial pathways to tune the H2 to CO composition to generate an array of valuable products including methanol, synthetic fuel, synthetic natural gas, and hydrogen. However, controlled H2:CO ratios are challenging on CO-active electrocatalysts like silver. We demonstrate that applying laser engineering to adjust the surface wetting state of a silver electrocatalyst with water contact angles θw ranging from 47° and 135°, H2:CO ratios can be tuned from 1 to 4 at modest potentials (-0.7 V vs. RHE, RHE - reversible hydrogen electrode) with almost total unity Faradaic efficiency. Both hydrophilic (θw = 47°) and more hydrophobic (θw = 135°) samples showed an increasing H2:CO trend with rising potentials (0.7 V - 1.2 V vs. RHE) due to mass transport. Conversely, a silver electrocatalyst with θw = 110° exhibited a constant H2:CO ratio of 4. This indicates catalyst wettability potentially affects *H and *HOCO intermediates' adsorption, impacting H2:CO ratios. Our results show the feasibility of syngas composition control on silver catalysts via surface wettability, providing a simpler alternative to complex multicomponent electrocatalytic systems. These findings open new avenues for the design of electrocatalysts with tailored syngas production capabilities, which could have significant implications for the sustainable production of chemicals and fuels.

Fine-Tuning Syngas Composition using Laser Surface Modified Silver Electrode for CO2 Electroreduction

Lightweight alloys such as aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy have garnered significant attention due to their widespread use in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. These applications usually require excellent corrosion performance of the alloys. Laser surface treatment (LST) has emerged as a promising surface modification technique to enhance the corrosion resistance of these alloys for its automation and reproducibility. In this study, the effects of LST based on a nanosecond pulsed laser on the corrosion resistance of lightweight metal alloys, specifically AA6061 and AZ31, were studied. LST was performed underwater, using the nanosecond laser and without using a protective coating or layer on the workpiece. The corrosion behaviors of these alloys were analyzed through electrochemical tests, including open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) measurements. The results demonstrated that LST significantly improved the polarization resistance, and higher laser power intensities led to increased corrosion resistance and reduced corrosion rates. This enhancement in anti-corrosion performance is attributed to the formation of a protective oxide layer on the surface, acting as a barrier against corrosion. The findings underscore the potential of laser surface treatment as a viable technique for enhancing the corrosion resistance of lightweight metal alloys.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance of Lightweight Metal Alloys through Laser Surface Processing

The use of air bubbles injected into viscous fluid flows to reduce frictional drag has been extensively studied for industrial applications, especially in the marine industry. However, the lack of control over air bubble stability, size, and shape has limited its widespread adoption. This research explores the use of laser-based surface wettability modification techniques to enhance control over air bubble behavior in water flows. 
Using nanosecond laser and chemical immersion, metal plates were processed to create wettability patterns consisting of superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic regions. Water tunnel experiments were conducted to observe the behavior of air bubbles over different wettability patterns. The results show that surface wettability can be used to control the size and spatial distribution of air bubbles, potentially enhancing the energy cost-benefit of drag reduction methods in the marine industry. Small circular bubbles were retained over untreated and hydrophilic surfaces, while immediate bubble coalescence was observed over superhydrophobic surfaces. 
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was also performed to verify and further understand the role of surface wettability. The results demonstrate the potential of laser-based surface wettability modification as a solution for improving the control of air bubble behavior in large-scale applications. This research provides insights into the feasibility of laser-based surface wettability modification as a novel approach for controlling air bubble behavior in water flows and improving the efficiency of drag reduction methods.

Enhancing Control of Air Bubbles in Water Flows through Laser-based Surface Wettability Patterning

Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized the production of complex geometries with superior properties compared to traditional manufacturing methods. However, the high roughness and poor wettability of as-produced surfaces of AM parts limit their suitability for certain applications. To address this, we present a maskless laser-assisted surface functionalization method to improve the wettability of metal 3D printed parts. 
This study explores the potential of combining metal AM with surface wettability patterning, a promising technique in fluid-related fields. Large area AlSi10Mg parts were fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), followed by an innovative laser-assisted functionalization (LAF) method to achieve patterned wetting surfaces. The LAF method consists of laser texturing and chemical modification steps, and two strategies were demonstrated to fabricate different types of wettability patterns. Strategy I produces two types of superhydrophobicity, while Strategy II creates a superhydrophobic-superhydrophilic patterned surface. The study demonstrates the simplicity, robustness, and feasibility of the process, and analyzes the processing mechanism, surface topography, and surface chemistry. The integration of surface wettability patterning and 3D-printing can optimize components to enhance performance and efficiency by creating intricate fluid flow pathways. Overall, this work highlights the potential of combining metal AM with surface wettability patterning, providing a pathway to produce high-performance parts with tailored wettability properties. This research has significant implications for fluid-related industries such as aerospace, automotive, and energy, as it offers unparalleled design freedom and the ability to create complex geometries.
