Investigating the physics of music is a reliable way to engage many of your students. A sonometer is a traditional device for learning about the physics of string instruments. The new PASCO sonometer adds new features to this classic experimental apparatus. These features make it quick and easy for students to gather the data they need to answer questions about wave properties, resonance, and standing waves in strings. The PASCO sonometer can be used with modern sound sensors and FFT analysis to measure frequency or "old school" with tuning forks. This presentation will introduce the new PASCO sonometer features, explain how to use it to collect data, and describe several experiments that can be performed with it. Student handouts and teacher guides will be provided.

Kudu.com is a web-based online platform that provides customizable textbook content, engaging videos, and auto-graded online homework questions. Homework questions can be used to conduct live clicker sessions where students use phones, tablets or laptops to respond as instructors see instant results. Instructors can add their own questions and access questions uploaded by others. They can edit the content, sequence, and structure of the text and embed additional videos and links. Up to now Kudu courses were used only by universities like UCLA and UC San Diego. A new AP Physics 1 course was added this year and is free for high school instructors and students to use. Skeptical? The new Smart Cart Motor from PASCO scientific opens a wide variety of possibilities for the study of motion. It can be used to generate many novel motion profiles by responding to inputs from the attached Smart Cart. It can respond to inputs from any PASCO sensor using PASCO Capstone or SPARKvue's software's built-in Blockly programming. This unleashes student creativity to control motion based on temperature, light, sound, magnetic field, and the actions of another Smart Cart. Computational thinking in the classroom has never been so engaging and exciting. Several applications will be demonstrated during this talk and sample code and lab activities will be distributed. Modern wireless sensor technology coupled with integrated programming tools allow students to measure characteristics of the complex motion of falling chain systems and compare them to predictions created by their Blockly computer code. Because the data collection only takes a few seconds, this can easily be converted to a distance learning activity by providing students with the data files, software, and lab handouts. Programming techniques allow for accurate predictions to be made by introductory students about systems that would otherwise be too complex. We will look at the motion of a chain draped over a pulley and the force of a dropped chain striking the ground. The labs are appropriate for AP and introductory college physics classes. A link to student lab handouts, teacher guides, and sample data files will be provided.
