SHORT BIO
Veronica E. NKIE is a Fourth-Year Medical Student at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM). She graduated from Montgomery College with an Associate’s Degree in Life Sciences, a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Master’s Degree in Public Health at the George Washington University Milken School of Public Health. Prior to beginning her medical education, she worked for six years as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at several Trauma Hospitals, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, VA, and Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
Veronica is a recipient of the Army Health Professions Scholarship, for which she served as Secretary of the Military Interest Group at her medical school. She is an alumnus of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Introduction to Integrated Health Care (IIHC) Virtual Fellow Program (Summer 2021), meant to connect minority students in Healthcare and Medicine. She is an alumnus of NMF’s Primary Care Leadership Program (Summer 2022), where she worked with other scholars in Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers in Los Angeles, CA, and was part of a research project aimed at studying the usefulness and efficacy of technology in the health and wellbeing of patients at these healthcare facilities. Veronica is also a current NMF Scholar with the Johnson and Johnson Alliance In Medicine (AIM) Future Leaders Scholarship Program, and the Primary Care Leadership Program (PCLP).
With a passion for and commitment to Minority Health and Education, Veronica served as the President of the Student National Medical Association ACOM Chapter, a national organization whose mission is to advance and encourage minority representation in the medical sector. She is a co-founder and former National Liaison for the SNMA Military Interest Group. She assisted with COVID vaccine and Community Health efforts in Dothan Alabama by volunteering with the Southeast Health Vaccine and Samaritan Clinics respectively. She is a member of the Perinatal Committee at ACOM, a program that assists women in the community who have experienced losses via miscarriage and/or stillbirth. Veronica hopes to continue fostering her interest in Minority Health, health consciousness and equity in minority communities throughout her time in the medical school and beyond.
