SHORT BIO

Debarun Bhattacharjya is a Senior Research Scientist at the Research AI department at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. His research spans various topics in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including probabilistic graphical models, temporal event models, causal inference, decision theory, preference models, reinforcement learning and computational creativity. He currently co-leads the research strategy on neuro-symbolic AI techniques for sequential decision making, to enable state-of-the-art knowledge augmented solutions for decision making in AI systems. He has worked on several external client projects, for government agencies and companies in the energy, transportation and consumer product sectors, as well as internal projects for sales and other business services. He has co-authored a book in decision analysis – Value of Information in the Earth Sciences – and several publications in highly refereed journals and top AI/ML conference proceedings including NeurIPS, AAAI, IJCAI, UAI and ICML. Debarun holds M.S and Ph.D degrees in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University and a B. Tech degree in Industrial and Production Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi.
