What started as an impersonal podcast to generate discussions for student journal responses, quickly became replaced with a series of short videos created on DaVinci Resolve and posted on Youtube. Students accessed the videos, and posted their responses, through our class page on the Flipgrid App. The purpose of these videos were three-fold: 1) as inspiration for discussions to elicit critical thinking, reflection, and higher level thinking in small and large-scale aspects of teaching physics, 2) as visual context to pique interest in the content to be covered in the upcoming week, and 3) as an inviting way to engage in flexible and asynchronous conversations, where students were both heard and seen. Videos ended with a prompt that each student responded to using Flipgrid. Join me as I share examples, questions posed, and conversation highlights from this strategy to engage preservice teachers in our physics pedagogy course.

New curricular outcomes are being developed and adopted towards emphasizing personal explanations from cultural experiences and influences intended to complement prevailing curriculum elements of physics phenomena and concepts. Efforts to educate for social justice, inclusion, and cultural awareness across disciplines is a departure from the siloed history of content only curricular matter. However, educating for global citizenship situates teachers in unchartered territory to include new perspectives and knowledge. This study, conducted with secondary level physics teachers (n=32), explored contributing factors related to their perceived efficacy of teaching in these new directions. Findings indicate that a) years of teaching, b) pedagogical strategies and foci, c) epistemological frames, and d) perceived degree of autonomy in conducting classes without administrative interference contribute to their perceptions. With the call for increased diversity in physics, this talk articulates implications for teaching physics in this modern educational landscape.

Painted yellow lines: Exploring parameters of physics teacher self-efficacy in a new teaching landscape

Physics education, especially astronomy education, is an ideal place to explore the intersection of science and religion. Grounded in tenets of peace education, the study of astronomy can be enriched by punctuating learning outcomes of physics concepts with the stories, mythlore, and teachings emanating from religion and culture. The purpose of this approach is to advance the physics we are teaching by resonating with students’ identities and being an entry to the greater conversation about (under)representation in physics, and how the intersection of religion and science provides insight into living and learning in a multi-religious and multicultural world. This session, which centers on the calendar by which cultural and religious observances are determined, advocates for integrating elements of cultural and religious knowledge with astronomy concepts as an inclusive space for all students. This pragmatic approach aligns with andragogical intentions of developing and delivering an increased holistic and inclusive curriculum.
