This paper presents an evaluation of 16 machine translation systems submitted to the Shared Task of the 9th Conference of Machine Translation (WMT24) for the English-Hindi (en-hi) language pair using our Complex Structures Test (CoST) suite. Aligning with this year’s test suite sub- task theme, “Help us break LLMs”, we curated a comprehensive test suite encompassing diverse datasets across various categories, including autobiography, poetry, legal, conversation, play, narration, technical, and mixed genres. Our evaluation reveals that all the systems struggle significantly with the archaic style of text like legal and technical writings or text with creative twist like conversation and poetry datasets, highlighting their weaknesses in handling complex linguistic structures and stylistic nuances inherent in these text types. Our evaluation identifies the strengths and limitations of the submitted models, pointing to specific areas where further research and development are needed to enhance their performance.

CoST of breaking the LLMs

Machine translation (MT) evaluation metrics like BLEU and chrF++ are widely used reference-based metrics that do not require training and are language-independent. How- ever, these metrics primarily focus on n- gram matching and often overlook semantic depth and contextual understanding. To ad- dress this gap, we introduce chrF-S (Seman- tic chrF++), an enhanced metric that integrates sentence embeddings to evaluate translation quality more comprehensively. By combining traditional character and word n-gram analysis with semantic information derived from em- beddings, chrF-S captures both syntactic ac- curacy and sentence-level semantics. This pa- per presents our contributions to the WMT24 shared metrics task, showcasing our partici- pation and the development of chrF-S. We also demonstrate that, according to prelimi- nary results on the leaderboard, our metric performs on par with other supervised and LLM-based metrics. By merging semantic in- sights with n-gram precision, chrF-S offers a significant enhancement in the assessment of machine-generated translations, advancing the field of MT evaluation.

chrF-S: Semantics Is All You Need

Fluency is a crucial goal of all Natural Language Generation (NLG) systems. Widely
used automatic evaluation metrics fall short in capturing the fluency of machine-generated
text. Assessing the fluency of NLG systems poses a challenge since these models are not limited
to simply reusing words from the input but may also generate abstractions. Existing reference-
based fluency evaluations, such as word overlap measures, often exhibit weak correlations with
human judgments. This paper presents an unsupervised technique for measuring text fluency
without the need for any reference. Our approach leverages various word embeddings and
trains language models using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) architectures. We also

experiment with other available multilingual Language Models (LMs). To assess the
performance of the models, we conduct a comparative analysis across 10 Indic languages,
correlating the obtained fluency scores with human judgments. We also release a human-
annotated benchmark test set for fluency.

Unsupervised approach to evaluate sentence-level fluency: Do we really need reference? 

In this paper, we describe our submission to the WMT22 metrics shared task. Our metric focuses on computing contextual and syntactic equivalences along with lexical, morphological, and semantic similarity. The intent is to capture the fluency and context of the MT outputs along with their adequacy. Fluency is captured using syntactic similarity and context is captured using sentence similarity leveraging sentence embeddings. The final sentence translation score is the weighted combination of three similarity scores: a) Syntactic Similarity b) Lexical, Morphological and Semantic Similarity, and c) Contextual Similarity. This paper outlines two improved versions of MEE i.e., MEE2 and MEE4. Additionally, we report our experiments on language pairs of en-de, en-ru and zh-en from WMT17-19 testset and further depict the correlation with human assessments.

Unsupervised Embedding-based Metric for MT Evaluation with Improved Human Correlation

This paper describes our submission to the WMT2022 shared metrics task. Our unsupervised metric estimates the translation quality at chunk-level and sentence-level. Source and target sentence chunks are retrieved by using a multi-lingual chunker. The chunk-level similarity is computed by leveraging BERT contextual word embeddings and sentence similarity scores are calculated by leveraging sentence embeddings of Language-Agnostic BERT models. The final quality estimation score is obtained by mean pooling the chunk-level and sentence-level similarity scores. This paper outlines our experiments and also reports the correlation with human judgements for en-de, en-ru and zh-en language pairs of WMT17, WMT18 and WMT19 test sets.

South East Asia is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world, with over 1200 languages spoken by 680 million people. However, the diversity of South East Asian languages has long been at risk due to the emphasis on national languages as lingua franca in South East Asian countries at the end of colonization; and the increasing prominence of English due to the necessities of globalization. This workshop will bring together practitioners from academia, government, and industry interested in the research and development of language technologies for SEA languages. The workshop also aims to build an inclusive community of everyone passionate about SEA languages, increase community awareness of works that have been developed to date on these languages, and foster collaborations that will strengthen and spur NLP research and
development in SEA languages.

I am honored and happy to welcome you to IJCNLP-AACL 2023! The conference hosts both the 13th
International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (IJCNLP) and the 3rd Conference of
the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (AACL). 
The joint conferences of IJCNLP and AACL have been organized by alternating leadership in the
Asia-Pacific region, in odd years by Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP) and
in even years by AACL. The conference is organized by AFNLP this year. 

Considering the current situation that we are not yet fully over the coronavirus pandemic, the
conference is offered in a hybrid mode, off-line in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, and on-line with the help
of Underline, during November 1-4, 2023. For those attending off-line, I hope that you will find time to
explore the exciting local area, which remains quite warm and pleasant at this time of the year. For
those attending on-line, I hope that the attendance is not much hampered, sometimes even enhanced
and comfortable, though the on-line arrangements have been made without ample time.

## Welcome to EMNLP 2022!
I am delighted to welcome you to EMNLP 2022! I believe this conference has been complicated beyond any precedent. Over the past year, it’s been thrilling to see the organization team approach each new puzzle with creativity and enthusiasm. We hope that those participating in Abu Dhabi as well as those joining remotely will leave the conference feeling newly inspired by the program and newly connected to our ever-growing community. Following EMNLP 2021 and major NLP conferences since, EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid,” serving both virtual and in-person participants.

Our key innovations for EMNLP 2022 include:

* EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid” in a second sense, as well: we allowed both direct and rolling review paper submissions, building on the pilot experiment of EMNLP 2021, which considered a small number of ARR submissions. 
* Familiar from NAACL but new to EMNLP, we’ve added an industry track.
* During the conference, “portals” will link virtual poster sessions to in-person conference participants during poster sessions each day.
* The first ACL-family conference in the United Arab Emirates.
