Recently, several methods such as private ANM, EM-PC and Priv-PC have been proposed to handle differentially private causal discovery in various scenarios including bivariate, multivariate Gaussian and categorical cases. And there was also a question raised by the latest research that how to achieve private nonlinear causal discovery with numerical data. This is exactly the problem that we aim to solve in this work. We propose to detect nonlinear causal relations between observed numerical data by using regression-based conditional independence test (RCIT) consisting of kernel ridge regression (KRR) and Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC) with permutation approximation. We conduct the sensitivity analysis for this RCIT and propose a private constraint-based causal discovery framework with differential privacy guarantees. We conduct extensive simulations and real-world experiments on both conditional independence test and causal discovery, and demonstrate that our techniques are practically able to handle nonlinear numerical cases and easy to implement.

Differentially Private Nonlinear Causal Discovery from Numerical Data

Recent works have empirically shown the effectiveness of data augmentation (DA) in NLP tasks, especially for those suffering from data scarcity. Intuitively, given the size of generated data, their diversity and quality are crucial to the performance of targeted tasks. However, to the best of our knowledge, most existing methods consider only either the diversity or the quality of augmented data, thus cannot fully mine the potential of DA for NLP.  In this paper, we present an easy and plug-in data augmentation framework EPiDA to support effective text classification. EPiDA employs two mechanisms: relative entropy maximization (REM) and conditional entropy minimization (CEM) to control data generation, where REM is designed to enhance the diversity of augmented data while CEM is exploited to ensure their semantic consistency. EPiDA can support efficient and continuous data generation for effective classifier training. Extensive experiments show that EPiDA outperforms existing SOTA methods in most cases, though not using any agent networks or pre-trained generation networks, and it works well with various DA algorithms and classification models.

EPiDA: An Easy Plug-in Data Augmentation Framework for High Performance Text Classification

Recently, many regression based conditional independence (CI) test methods have been proposed to solve the problem of causal discovery. These methods provide alternatives to test CI by first removing the information of the controlling set from the two target variables, and then testing the independence between the corresponding residuals Res1 and Res2. When the residuals are linearly uncorrelated, the independence test between them is nontrivial. With the ability to calculate inner product in high-dimensional space, kernel-based methods are usually used to achieve this goal, but still consume considerable time. In this paper, we investigate the independence between two linear combinations under linear non-Gaussian structural equation model. We show that the dependence between the two residuals can be captured by the difference between the similarity of (Res1, Res2) and that of (Res1, Res3) (Res3 is generated by random permutation) in high-dimensional space. With this result, we design a new method called SCIT for CI test, where permutation test is performed to control Type I error rate. The proposed method is simpler yet more efficient and effective than the existing ones. When applied to causal discovery, the proposed method outperforms the counterparts in terms of both speed and Type II error rate, especially in the case of small sample size, which is validated by our extensive experiments on various datasets.

Residual Similarity Based Conditional Independence Test and Its Application in Causal Discovery

With the rapid increase of mobile devices and online media, more and more people prefer posting/viewing videos online. Generally, these videos are presented on video streaming sites with image thumbnails and text titles. While facing huge amounts of videos, a viewer clicks through a certain video with high probability because of its eye-catching thumbnail. However, current video thumbnails are created manually, which is time-consuming and quality-unguaranteed. And static image thumbnails contain very limited information of the corresponding videos, which prevents users from successfully clicking what they really want to view.
		
In this paper, we address a novel problem, namely GIF thumbnail generation, which aims to automatically generate GIF thumbnails for videos and consequently boost their Click-Through-Rate (CTR). Here, a GIF thumbnail is an animated GIF file consisting of multiple segments from the video, containing more information of the target video than a static image thumbnail. To support this study, we build the first GIF thumbnails benchmark dataset that consists of 1070 videos covering a total duration of 69.1 hours, and 5394 corresponding manually-annotated GIFs. To solve this problem, we propose a learning-based automatic GIF thumbnail generation model, which is called Generative Variational Dual-Encoder (GEVADEN).  As not relying on any user interaction information (e.g. time-sync comments and real-time view counts), this model is applicable to newly-uploaded/rarely-viewed videos. Experiments on our built dataset show that GEVADEN significantly outperforms several baselines, including video-summarization and highlight-detection based ones. Furthermore, we develop a pilot application of the proposed model on an online video platform with 9814 videos covering 1231 hours, which shows that our model achieves a 37.5% CTR improvement over traditional image thumbnails. This further validates the effectiveness of the proposed model and the promising application prospect of GIF thumbnails.

GIF Thumbnails: Attract More Clicks to Your Videos

Recently, regression based conditional independence (CI) tests have been employed to solve the problem of causal discovery. These methods provide an alternative way to test for CI by transforming CI to independence between residuals. Generally, it is nontrivial to check for independence when these residuals are linearly uncorrelated. With the ability to represent high-order moments, kernel-based methods are usually used to achieve this goal, but at a cost of considerable time. In this paper, we investigate the independence between two linear combinations under linear non-Gaussian structural equation model (SEM). We show that generally the 1-st to 4-th moments of the two linear combinations contain enough information to infer whether or not they are independent. The proposed method provides a simpler but more effective way to measure CIs, with only calculating the 1-st to 4-th moments of the input variables. When applied to causal discovery, the proposed method outperforms kernel-based methods in terms of both speed and accuracy. which is validated by extensive experiments.

Testing Independence between Linear Combinations for Causal Discovery

In recent years, Few-shot Object Detection (FSOD) has become an increasingly important research topic in computer vision. However, existing FSOD methods require strong annotations including category labels and bounding boxes, and their performance is heavily dependent on the quality of box annotations. However, acquiring strong annotations is both expensive and time-consuming. This inspires the study on weakly supervised FSOD (WS-FSOD in short), which realizes FSOD with only image-level annotations, i.e., category labels. In this paper, we propose a new and effective weakly supervised FSOD method named WFS-DETR. By a well-designed pretraining process, WFS-DETR first acquires general object localization and integrity judgment capabilities on large-scale pretraining data. Then, it introduces object integrity into multiple-instance learning to solve the common local optimum problem by comprehensively exploiting both semantic and visual information. Finally, with simple fine-tuning, it transfers the knowledge learned from the base classes to the novel classes, which enables accurate detection of novel objects. Benefiting from this ``pretraining-refinement'' mechanism, WSF-DETR can achieve good generalization on different datasets. Extensive experiments also show that the proposed method clearly outperforms the existing counterparts in the WS-FSOD task.

The Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL) is taking place July 10-15, 2022 as a hybrid event, in Seattle, WA and online. We are happy to welcome all of you to conference! 
 
The main conference program features oral presentations, in-person and virtual posters and demo sessions, a plenary session for our best paper presentations and awards, keynote presentations, a plenary panel on the place of linguistics and symbolic structures in NLP, and an Industrial Track panel on Careers in NLP.
 
Posters (including Findings of NAACL 2022) and demos are grouped by areas for both the in-person and the virtual sessions. For the virtual component, the talks will be on Zoom and the posters and the demos will be in GatherTown. The Student Research Workshop and will have an oral session and a poster session.
