UNESCO has classified 2500 out of 7000 languages spoken worldwide as endangered. Attrition of a language leads to loss of traditional wisdom, folk literature, and the essence of the community that uses it. It is therefore imperative to bring digital inclusion to these languages and avoid its extinction. Low resource languages are at a greater risk of extinction. Lack of unsupervised Optical Character Recognition(OCR) methodologies for low resource languages is one of the reasons impeding their digital inclusion. We propose VOLTAGE - a contrastive learning based OCR methodology, leveraging auto-glyph feature recommendation for cluster-based labelling. We augment the labelled data for diversity and volume using image transformations and Generative Adversarial Networks. Voltage has been designed using Takri - a family of scripts used in 16th to 20th century in the Himalayan regions of India. We present results for Takri along with other Indic scripts (both low and high resource) to substantiate the universal behavior of the methodology. An accuracy of 95% for machine printed and 87% for handwritten samples on Takri script has been achieved. We conduct baseline and ablation studies along with building downstream use cases for Takri, demonstrating the usefulness of our work.

VOLTAGE: A Versatile Contrastive Learning based OCR Methodology for ultra low-resource scripts through Auto Glyph Feature Extraction

Satellite data bolstered by their increasing accessibility is leading to many endeavors of automated monitoring of the earth's surface for various applications. Such applications demand high spatial resolution images at a temporal resolution of a few days which entails the challenge of processing a huge volume of image time series data. To overcome this computing bottleneck, we present PatchNet, a bespoke adaptation of beam search and attention mechanism. PatchNet is an automated patch selection neural network that requires only a partial spatial traversal of an image time series and yet achieves impressive results. Satellite systems face a trade-off between spatial and temporal resolutions due to budget/technical constraints e.g., Landsat-8/9 or Sentinel-2 have high spatial resolution whereas, MODIS has high temporal resolution. To deal with the limitation of coarse temporal resolution, we propose FuSITSNet, a twofold feature-based generic fusion model with multimodal learning in a contrastive setting. It produces a learned representation after fusion of two satellite image time series leveraging finer spatial resolution of Landsat and finer temporal resolution of MODIS. The patch alignment module of FuSITSNet aligns the PatchNet processed patches of Landsat-8 with the corresponding MODIS regions to incorporate its finer resolution temporal features. The untraversed patches are handled by the cross-modality attention which highlights additional hot spot features from the two modalities. We conduct extensive experiments on more than 2000 counties of US for crop yield, snow cover, and solar energy prediction and show that even one-fourth spatial processing of image time series produces state-of-the-art results.  FuSITSNet outperforms the predictions of single modality and data obtained using existing generative fusion models and allows for monitoring of dynamic phenomena using freely accessible images, thereby unlocking new opportunities.

Efficient Representation Learning of Satellite Image Time Series and Their Fusion for Spatiotemporal Applications

Online social networks are ubiquitous and user-friendly. Nevertheless, it is vital to detect and moderate offensive content to maintain decency and empathy. However, mining social media texts is a complex task since users don't adhere to any fixed patterns. Comments can be written in any combination of languages and many of them may be low-resource.

In this paper, we present our system for the LT-EDI shared task on detecting homophobia and transphobia in social media comments. We experiment with a number of monolingual and multilingual transformer based models such as mBERT along with a data augmentation technique for tackling class imbalance. Such pretrained large models have recently shown tremendous success on a variety of benchmark tasks in natural language processing. We observe their performance on a carefully annotated, real life dataset of YouTube comments in English as well as Tamil.

Our submission achieved ranks 9, 6 and 3 with a macro-averaged F1-score of 0.42, 0.64 and 0.58 in the English, Tamil and Tamil-English subtasks respectively. The code for the system has been open sourced.

valued and included, so it is necessary to build LT that serves this purpose. Recent results have shown that big data and
deep learning are entrenching existing biases and that some algorithms are even naturally biased due to problems such
as ‘regression to the mode’. Our focus is on creating LT that will be more inclusive of gender, racial, sexual orientation,
persons with disability. The workshop will focus on creating speech and language technology to address EDI not only in
English, but also in less resourced languages.

# Welcome everyone to ACL 2022!

The 60th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics is taking place May 22-27, 2022 as a hybrid event, in Dublin and online. We are happy to welcome all of you to this anniversary edition with an almost 50-50 in-person and virtual participation. 
The main conference program features oral presentations, in-person and virtual posters and demo sessions, a plenary session for our best paper presentations and awards, three amazing keynote events and two new initiatives of invited talks: Spotlight Talks for Young Rising Stars (STIRS) and The Next Big Idea Talks. Posters (including Findings of ACL 2022) and demos are grouped by areas for both the in-person and the virtual sessions. For the virtual component, the talks will be on Zoom and the posters and the demos will be in GatherTown. The Student Research Workshop will have an oral session and a poster session as part of Poster Session 1. The program also features eight Tutorials and 28 Workshops.
