Personalized dialogue systems have gained significant attention in recent years for their ability to generate responses in alignment with different personas. However, most existing approaches rely on pre-defined personal profiles, which are not only time-consuming and labor-intensive to create but also lack flexibility. We propose In-Dialogue Learning (IDL), a fine-tuning framework that enhances the ability of pre-trained large language models to leverage dialogue history to characterize persona for personalized dialogue generation tasks without pre-defined profiles. Our experiments on three datasets demonstrate that IDL brings substantial improvements, with BLEU and ROUGE scores increasing by up to 200% and 247%, respectively. Additionally, the results of human evaluations further validate the efficacy of our proposed method.

In-Dialogues We Learn: Towards Personalized Dialogue Without Pre-defined Profiles through In-Dialogue Learning

Recent research observed a noteworthy phenomenon in large language models (LLMs), referred to as the "reversal curse." The reversal curse is that when dealing with two entities, denoted as $a$ and $b$, connected by their relation $R$ and its inverse $R^{-1}$, LLMs excel in handling sequences in the form of "$aRb$," but encounter challenges when processing "$bR^{-1}a$," whether in generation or comprehension. For instance, GPT-4 can accurately respond to the query "Tom Cruise's mother is?" with "Mary Lee Pfeiffer," but it struggles to provide a satisfactory answer when asked "Mary Lee Pfeiffer's son is?" In this paper, we undertake the first-ever study of how the reversal curse happens in LLMs. Our investigations reveal that the reversal curse can stem from the specific training objectives, which become particularly evident in the widespread use of next-token prediction within most causal language models. We hope this initial investigation can draw more attention to the reversal curse, as well as other underlying limitations in current LLMs.

An Analysis and Mitigation of the Reversal Curse

Role-playing agents (RPAs), powered by large language models, have emerged as a flourishing field of applications. However, a key challenge lies in assessing whether RPAs accurately reproduce the personas of target characters, namely their character fidelity. Existing methods mainly focus on the knowledge and linguistic patterns of characters. This paper, instead, introduces a novel perspective to evaluate the personality fidelity of RPAs with psychological scales. Overcoming drawbacks of previous self-report assessments on RPAs, we propose InCharacter, namely **In**terviewing **Character** agents for personality tests. Experiments include various types of RPAs and LLMs, covering 32 distinct characters on 14 widely used psychological scales. The results validate the effectiveness of InCharacter in measuring RPA personalities. Then, with InCharacter, we show that state-of-the-art RPAs exhibit personalities highly aligned with the human-perceived personalities of the characters, achieving an accuracy up to 80.7%.

InCharacter: Evaluating Personality Fidelity in Role-Playing Agents through Psychological Interviews

Recently, the advent of large language models (LLMs) has revolutionized generative agents. Among them, Role-Playing Conversational Agents (RPCAs) attract considerable attention due to their ability to emotionally engage users. However, the absence of a comprehensive benchmark impedes progress in this field. To bridge this gap, we introduce \textit{CharacterEval}, a Chinese benchmark for comprehensive RPCA assessment, complemented by a tailored high-quality dataset. The dataset comprises 1,785 multi-turn role-playing dialogues, encompassing 11,376 examples and featuring 77 characters derived from Chinese novels and scripts. It was carefully constructed, beginning with initial dialogue extraction via GPT-4, followed by rigorous human-led quality control, and enhanced with in-depth character profiles sourced from Baidu Baike. \textit{CharacterEval} employs a multifaceted evaluation approach, encompassing thirteen targeted metrics on four dimensions. To facilitate the convenient evaluation for these subjective metrics in \textit{CharacterEval}, we further developed CharacterRM, a role-playing reward model based on human annotations, which has a higher correlation with human judgment compared to GPT-4. Comprehensive experiments on \textit{CharacterEval} demonstrate that Chinese LLMs exhibit more promising capabilities than GPT-4 in Chinese role-playing conversation\footnote{The source code, data source, and reward model will be publicly accessible after acceptance.}.

CharacterEval: A Chinese Benchmark for Role-Playing Conversational Agent Evaluation

Large language model agents have demonstrated remarkable advancements across various complex tasks. Recent works focus on optimizing the agent team or employing self-reflection to iteratively solve complex tasks. Since these agents are all based on the same LLM, only conducting self-evaluation or removing underperforming agents does not substantively enhance the capability of the agents. We argue that a comprehensive evaluation and accumulating experience from evaluation feedback is an effective approach to improving system performance. In this paper, we propose Reusable Experience Accumulation with $\mathbf{360^\circ}$ Assessment ($360^\circ$REA), a hierarchical multi-agent framework inspired by corporate organizational practices. The framework employs a novel $360^\circ$ performance assessment method for multi-perspective performance evaluation with fine-grained assessment. To enhance the capability of agents in addressing complex tasks, we introduce dual-level experience pool for agents to accumulate experience through fine-grained assessment. Extensive experiments on complex task datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of $360^\circ$REA.

$360^\circ$REA: Towards A Reusable Experience Accumulation with $360^\circ$ Assessment for Multi-Agent System

Topic models have been thoroughly investigated for multiple years due to their great potential in analyzing and understanding texts. Recently, researchers combine the study of topic models with deep learning techniques, known as Neural Topic Models (NTMs). However, existing NTMs are mainly tested based on general document modeling without considering different textual analysis scenarios. We assume that there are different characteristics to model topics in different textual analysis tasks. In this paper, we propose a Conversational Neural Topic Model (ConvNTM) designed in particular for the conversational scenario. Unlike the general document topic modeling, a conversation session lasts for multiple turns: each short-text utterance complies with a single topic distribution and these topic distributions are dependent across turns. Moreover, there are roles in conversations, a.k.a., speakers and addressees. Topic distributions are partially determined by such roles in conversations. We take these factors into account to model topics in conversations via the multi-turn and multi-role formulation. We also leverage the word co-occurrence relationship as a new training objective to further improve topic quality. Comprehensive experimental results based on the benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed ConvNTM achieves the best performance both in topic modeling and in typical downstream tasks within conversational research (i.e., dialogue act classification and dialogue response generation).
