SHORT BIO
Dr. Chioma Blaise Chikere (currently being assessed for professorship) is a Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria (employed 2005 to date). Her specialization is Environmental Biotechnology/Petroleum Microbiology. She received 2005 OWSD PhD Fellowship for split-site Ph. D. Programme at the Universities of Port Harcourt and Pretoria, in Nigeria and South Africa respectively. She has published widely with over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 60 local and international conference papers presented and 9 articles in conference proceedings. Her Ph.D. Thesis entitled ‘Bacterial Diversity and Community Dynamics during the Bioremediation of Crude Oil- Polluted soil’ was awarded by National Universities Commission (NUC) Nigeria the BEST DOCTORAL THESIS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES for 2010. Other awards are: International Foundation of Science (IFS) Sweden research grants in 2007 and 2012; University of Port Harcourt 2015 distinguished merit award for diligent and meritorious service during University of Port Harcourt’s 40th anniversary; 2016 TWAS-UNESCO Associateship (June 2016-Dec. 2020) to Department of Environmental Sciences, University of South Africa (UNISA) under Professor Memory Tekere, the Elsevier Foundation (EF) 2017 Green and Sustainable Chemistry Challenge 2nd prize held in Berlin, Germany and Research Fellow appointment by UNISA (2021-2024). The EF project benefitted a Niger Delta Community that suffered untold environmental degradation occasioned by crude oil pollution. Ecosystem services and biodiversity have been fully restored through bioremediation in the land. Her professional membership spans national and international notable scientific organizations. She mentors young female scientists to be retained in STEM.
