Text-to-image prompt refinement (T2I-Refine) aims to rephrase or extend an input prompt with more descriptive details that can be leveraged to generate images with higher quality. In this paper, we study an adversarial prompt attacking problem for T2I-Refine, where to goal is to implicitly inject specific concept bias to the input prompts during the refinement process so that the generated images, still with higher quality, are explicitly biased to the target group. Our study is motivated by the limitation of current T2I-Refine research that lacks of explorations on the potential capacity of T2I-Refine models to provide prompt refinement service in a biased or advertising manner. To address the limitations, we develop RAt, a prompt refinement and attacking framework that attacks input prompts with intentionally selected adversarial replacements by optimizing a token distribution matrix based on the text-to-image finetuning strategy with a token-level bias obfuscation loss as regularization. We evaluate RAt on a large-scale text-to-image dataset with various concepts as target in both in-domain and transfer-domain scenarios. The evaluation results demonstrate that, compared to other T2I-Refine schemes, RAt is well capable of implicitly attacking input prompts to generate images with higher quality and explicit visual bias towards specific concept group.

RAt: Injecting Implicit Bias for Text-To-Image Prompt Refinement Models

Audio-Visual Question Answering (AVQA) is a challenging task that involves answering questions based on both auditory and visual information in videos. A significant challenge is interpreting complex multi-modal scenes, which include both visual objects and sound sources, and connecting them to the given question. In this paper, we introduce the Source-aware Semantic Representation Network (SaSR-Net), a novel model designed for AVQA. SaSR-Net utilizes source-wise learnable tokens to efficiently capture and align audio-visual elements with the corresponding question. It streamlines the fusion of audio and visual information using spatial and temporal attention mechanisms to identify answers in multi-modal scenes. Extensive experiments on the Music-AVQA and AVQA-Yang datasets show that SaSR-Net outperforms state-of-the-art AVQA methods. We will release our source code and pre-trained models.

SaSR-Net: Source-Aware Semantic Representation Network for Enhancing Audio-Visual Question Answering

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable capabilities across diverse applications. However, concerns regarding their security, particularly the vulnerability to jailbreak attacks, persist. Drawing inspiration from adversarial training in deep learning and LLM agent learning processes, we introduce the In-Context Adversarial Game (ICAG) for defending against jailbreaks without the need for fine-tuning. ICAG leverages agent learning to conduct an adversarial game, aiming to dynamically extend knowledge to defend against jailbreaks. Unlike traditional methods that rely on static datasets, ICAG employs an iterative process to enhance both the defense and attack agents. This continuous improvement process strengthens defenses against newly generated jailbreak prompts. Our empirical studies affirm ICAG's efficacy, where LLMs safeguarded by ICAG exhibit significantly reduced jailbreak success rates across various attack scenarios. Moreover, ICAG demonstrates remarkable transferability to other LLMs, indicating its potential as a versatile defense mechanism. Defending Jailbreak Prompts via In-Context Adversarial Game

The paper introduces SceMQA, a novel benchmark for scientific multimodal question answering at the college entrance level. It addresses a critical educational phase often overlooked in existing benchmarks, spanning high school to pre-college levels. SceMQA focuses on core science subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It features a blend of multiple-choice and free-response formats, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of AI models' abilities. Additionally, our benchmark provides specific knowledge points for each problem and detailed explanations for each answer. SceMQA also uniquely presents problems with identical contexts but varied questions to facilitate a more thorough and accurate assessment of reasoning capabilities. In the experiment, we evaluate both open-source and close-source state-of-the-art Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), across various experimental settings. The results show that further research and development are needed in developing more capable MLLM, as highlighted by only 50% to 60% accuracy achieved by the strongest models.

SceMQA: A Scientific College Entrance Level Multimodal Question Answering Benchmark

Predicting chemical reaction yields is pivotal for efficient chemical synthesis, an area that focuses on the creation of novel compounds for diverse uses. 
Yield prediction demands accurate representations of reactions for forecasting practical transformation rates. Yet, the uncertainty issues broadcasting in real-world situations prohibit current models to excel in this task owing to the high sensitivity of yield activities and the uncertainty in yield measurements.  Existing models often utilize single-modal feature representations, such as molecular fingerprints, SMILES sequences, or molecular graphs, which is not sufficient to capture the complex interactions and dynamic behavior of molecules in reactions. In this paper, we present an advanced \underline{U}ncertainty-\underline{A}ware \underline{M}ultimodal model (UAM) to tackle these challenges. Our approach seamlessly integrates data sources from multiple modalities by encompassing sequence representations, molecular graphs, and expert-defined chemical reaction features for a comprehensive representation of reactions. Additionally, we address both the model and data-based uncertainty, refining the model's predictive capability. Extensive experiments on three datasets, including two high throughput experiment (HTE) datasets and one chemist-constructed Amide coupling reaction dataset, demonstrate that UAM outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Uncertainty-Aware Yield Prediction with Multimodal Molecular Features

Solving math word problems (MWP) is a challenging task for natural language processing systems, as it requires to not only identify and comprehend the problem description within the context, but also to deduce a solution in accordance with the posed question. Previous solvers have been found to prioritize the context over the question, resulting in low performance when solving multiple questions under the same context. In this paper, we present a question-oriented strategy to address this issue and improve the generalizability of MWP solvers. Our approach features an entity-aware encoder that enhances the connection between MWP context and question via entities in established dependency graphs, aiming at obtaining better problem representations. Then, a question-guided decoder is trained using a contrastive learning strategy to enhance the question representations. Empirical evaluations on four benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms previous solvers and exhibits a favorable balance between efficacy and efficiency in MWP solving. In addition, our solver is not reliant on any specific pre-trained model and demonstrates seamless compatibility with different pre-trained model backbones.

Don't be Blind to Questions: Question-Oriented Math Word Problem Solving

Current math word problem (MWP) solvers are usually Seq2Seq models  trained by the (one-problem; one-solution) pairs, each of which is made of a problem description and a solution showing reasoning flow to get the correct answer. However, one MWP problem naturally has multiple solution equations. The training of an MWP solver with (one-problem; one-solution) pairs excludes other correct solutions, and thus limits the generalizability of the MWP solver. One feasible solution to this limitation is to augment multiple solutions to a given problem. However, it is difficult to collect diverse and accurate augment solutions through human efforts. In this paper, we design a new training framework for an MWP solver by introducing a solution buffer and a solution discriminator. The buffer includes solutions generated by an MWP solver to encourage  the training data diversity.  The discriminator controls the quality of buffered solutions to participate in training. Our framework is flexibly applicable to a wide setting of fully, semi-weakly and weakly supervised training for all Seq2Seq MWP solvers. We conduct extensive experiments on a benchmark dataset Math23k and a new dataset named Weak12k, and show that our framework improves the performance of various MWP solvers under different settings by generating correct and diverse solutions.

Generalizing Math Word Problem Solvers via Solution Diversification

Are Federated Learning (FL) systems free from backdoor poisoning with the arsenal of various defense strategies deployed? This is an intriguing problem with significant practical implications regarding the utility of FL services. Despite the recent flourish of poisoning-resilient FL methods, our study shows that carefully tuning the collusion between malicious participants can minimize the trigger-induced bias of the poisoned local model from the poison-free one, which plays the key role in delivering stealthy backdoor attacks and circumventing a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art defense methods in FL. In our work, we instantiate the attack strategy by proposing a distributed backdoor attack method, namely Cerberus Poisoning (CerP). It jointly tunes the backdoor trigger and controls the poisoned model changes on each malicious participant to achieve a stealthy yet successful backdoor attack against a wide spectrum of defensive mechanisms of federated learning techniques. Our extensive study on 3 large-scale benchmark datasets and 13 mainstream defensive mechanisms confirms that Cerberus Poisoning raises a significantly severe threat to the integrity and security of federated learning practices, regardless of the flourish of robust Federated Learning methods.

Poisoning with Cerberus: Stealthy and Colluded Backdoor Attack against Federated Learning

As it is cumbersome and expensive to acquire a huge amount of data for training neural dialog models, data augmentation is proposed to effectively utilize existing training samples.
However, current data augmentation techniques on the dialog generation task mostly augment all cases in the training dataset without considering the intrinsic attributes between different cases.
We argue that not all cases are beneficial for augmentation task, and the cases suitable for augmentation should obey the following two attributes: 
(1) low-quality (the dialog model cannot generate a high-quality response for the case),
(2) representative (the case should represent the property of the whole dataset).
Herein, we explore this idea by proposing a Selective Data Augmentation framework (SDA) for the response generation task.
SDA employs a dual adversarial network to select the lowest quality and most representative data points for augmentation in one stage. 
Extensive experiments conducted on two publicly available datasets, i.e., DailyDialog and OpenSubtitles, show that our framework can improve the response generation performance with respect to various metrics

Learning towards Selective Data Augmentation for Dialogue Generation

Our work targets at searching feasible adversarial perturbation to attack a classifier with  high-dimensional categorical inputs in a domain-agnostic setting.
This is intrinsically a NP-hard knapsack problem where the exploration space becomes explosively larger as the feature dimension increases. Without the help of domain knowledge, solving this problem via heuristic method, such as Branch-and-Bound, suffers from exponential complexity, yet can bring arbitrarily bad attack results. We address the challenge via the lens of multi-armed bandit based combinatorial search. Our proposed method, namely FEAT, treats modifying each categorical feature as pulling an arm in multi-armed bandit programming. Our objective is to achieve highly efficient and effective attack using an Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP)-enhanced Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) exploration strategy. Our theoretical analysis bounding the regret gap of FEAT guarantees its practical attack performance. In empirical analysis, we compare FEAT with other state-of-the-art domain-agnostic attack methods over various real-world categorical data sets of different applications. Substantial experimental observations confirm the expected efficiency and attack effectiveness of FEAT applied in different application scenarios. Our work further hints the applicability of FEAT for assessing the adversarial vulnerability of classification systems with high-dimensional categorical inputs. 

Towards Efficient and Domain-Agnostic Evasion Attack with High-dimensional Categorical Inputs

This paper introduces ArtELingo, a new benchmark and dataset, designed to encourage work on diversity across languages and cultures. Following ArtEmis, a collection of 80k artworks from WikiArt with 0.45M emotion labels and English-only captions, ArtELingo adds another 0.79M annotations in Arabic and Chinese, plus 4.8K in Spanish to evaluate "cultural-transfer” performance. 51K artworks have 5 annotations or more in 3 languages. This diversity makes it possible to study similarities and differences across languages and cultures. Further, we investigate captioning tasks, and find diversity improves the performance of baseline models. ArtELingo is publicly available at `www.artelingo.org` with standard splits and baseline models. We hope our work will help ease future research on multilinguality and culturally-aware AI.

ArtELingo: A Million Emotion Annotations of WikiArt with Emphasis on Diversity over Language and Culture

Retrosynthetic planning plays an important role in the field of organic chemistry, which could generate a synthetic route for the target product. The synthetic route is a series of reactions which are started from the available molecules. The most challenging problem in the generation of the synthetic route is the large search space of the candidate reactions. Estimating the cost of candidate reactions has been proved effectively to prune the search space, which could achieve a higher accuracy with the same search iteration. And the estimation of one reaction is comprised of the estimations of all its reactants. So, how to estimate the cost of these reactants will directly influence the quality of results. To get a better performance, we propose a new framework, named GNN-Retro, for retrosynthetic planning problem by combining graph neural networks(GNN) and the latest search algorithm. The structure of GNN in our framework could incorporate the information of neighboring molecules, which will improve the estimation accuracy of our framework. The experiments on the USPTO dataset show that our framework could outperform the state-of-the-art methods with a large margin under the same settings.

International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (IJCNLP) and the 3rd Conference of
the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (AACL). 
The joint conferences of IJCNLP and AACL have been organized by alternating leadership in the
Asia-Pacific region, in odd years by Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP) and
in even years by AACL. The conference is organized by AFNLP this year. 

Considering the current situation that we are not yet fully over the coronavirus pandemic, the
conference is offered in a hybrid mode, off-line in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, and on-line with the help
of Underline, during November 1-4, 2023. For those attending off-line, I hope that you will find time to
explore the exciting local area, which remains quite warm and pleasant at this time of the year. For
those attending on-line, I hope that the attendance is not much hampered, sometimes even enhanced

## Welcome to EMNLP 2022!
I am delighted to welcome you to EMNLP 2022! I believe this conference has been complicated beyond any precedent. Over the past year, it’s been thrilling to see the organization team approach each new puzzle with creativity and enthusiasm. We hope that those participating in Abu Dhabi as well as those joining remotely will leave the conference feeling newly inspired by the program and newly connected to our ever-growing community. Following EMNLP 2021 and major NLP conferences since, EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid,” serving both virtual and in-person participants.

Our key innovations for EMNLP 2022 include:

* EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid” in a second sense, as well: we allowed both direct and rolling review paper submissions, building on the pilot experiment of EMNLP 2021, which considered a small number of ARR submissions. 
* Familiar from NAACL but new to EMNLP, we’ve added an industry track.
* During the conference, “portals” will link virtual poster sessions to in-person conference participants during poster sessions each day.
* The first ACL-family conference in the United Arab Emirates.
