Emotion Detection (ED) is a process that aims to identify and analyze human emotions, such as happiness, anger, and sadness. Nowadays, there is a huge interest in identifying the causes behind different emotions in written text, Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction (ECPE). ECPE involves discovering triggers or motivations that lead to certain emotions. Large Language Models (LLMs) are the new era that has greatly improved Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. Since ECPE requires a high level of context, this proposed work aims to leverage and evaluate LLMs for emotion-cause pair extraction from text.

Leveraging and Evaluating Large Language Models for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction

Africa is home to over 2,000 languages from over six language families and has the highest linguistic diversity among all continents. This includes 75 languages with at least one million speakers each. Yet, there is little NLP research conducted on African languages. Crucial in enabling such research is the availability of high-quality annotated datasets. In this paper, we introduce AfriSenti, a sentiment analysis benchmark that contains a total of >110,000 tweets in 14 African languages (Amharic, Algerian Arabic, Hausa, Igbo, Kinyarwanda, Moroccan Arabic, Mozambican Portuguese, Nigerian Pidgin, Oromo, Swahili, Tigrinya, Twi, Xitsonga, and Yoruba) from four language families. The tweets were annotated by native speakers and used in the AfriSenti-SemEval shared task (with over 200 participants, see website: https://afrisenti-semeval.github.io). We describe the data collection methodology, annotation process, and the challenges we dealt with when curating each dataset. We further report baseline experiments conducted on the AfriSenti datasets and discuss their usefulness.

AfriSenti: A Twitter Sentiment Analysis Benchmark for African Languages

Recently, using deep neural networks for machine translation (MT) tasks has received great attention. To learn more abstract representations of the input and store them as continuous vectors, these networks need a large amount of data. However, very few research studies have been conducted, and only a few data points are available for Amharic. The progress of the Amharic to English MT task is affected by a lack of a relatively large and available benchmark dataset. This paper presents the first relatively large-scale Amharic-English parallel corpora (1.1M) for the MT task. We ran experiments using a pre-trained language model (M2M100\_48M) and Transformer from scratch. The pre-trained models outperformed the baseline Transformer model.

AmEn: Amharic-English Large Parallel Corpus for Machine Translation

This paper examines the main challenges in Amharic hate speech classification tasks. The potential sources of errors in Amharic hate speech classification are explored in detail. Out of a total of more than 18 million tweets in our Twitter corpus, we annotate over 15k tweets with two independent Amharic native-speaker annotators. A Cohen's kappa score of 48% for inter-annotator agreement is achieved. An adjudicator is employed to decide on disputed annotations and determine the final gold labels. Logistic regression, Linear SVM, and the two fine-tuned contextual embedding transformer models: AmFLAIR and AmRoBERTa are employed. Among all the models, AmFLAIR achieves the best performance result with an F1-score of 72%.

Error Analysis in Amharic Hate Speech Detection Task

This survey delves into the current state of natural language processing (NLP) for four Ethiopian languages: Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya, and Wolaytta. Through this paper, we identify key challenges and opportunities for NLP research in Ethiopia. Furthermore, we provide a centralized repository on GitHub that contains publicly available resources for various NLP tasks in these languages. This repository can be updated periodically with contributions from other researchers. Our objective is to identify research gaps and disseminate the information to NLP researchers interested in Ethiopian languages and encourage future research in this domain.

Natural Language Processing in Ethiopian Languages: Current State, Challenges, and Opportunities

Machine Translation (MT) is a sub-field of NLP that investigates how to use computer software to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another without human involvement. Nowadays, using deep neural networks for MT tasks has received a great deal of attention. This paper presents the first relatively large-scale Amharic-English parallel sentence dataset. Using these compiled data, we build bi-directional Amharic-English translation models by fine-tuning Facebook's multilingual pre-trained model achieving a BLEU score of 37.79 in Amharic-English translation and 32.74 in English-Amharic translation. Additionally, we explore the effects of Amharic homophone normalization on the MT task. The results show that normalization of Amharic homophone characters increases the performance of Amharic-English MT in both directions.

The Effect of Normalization for Bi-directional Amharic-English Neural Machine Translation

This paper presents an Amharic hate speech annotation using the Yandex Toloka crowdsourcing platform. The dataset is collected from 5 consecutive years 2018-2022, following some controversial events in Ethiopia that put the country in violence. We consider one-month data starting from the event date in each year. Accordingly, we annotate 5,400 tweets, nearly 1k tweets for each year. We explore the main challenges of crowdsourcing annotation for Amharic hate speech data collection using Toloka. We attain a Fleiss kappa score of 0.34 using three independent annotators that annotate the tweets where the gold label is determined using majority voting. Using the datasets, we build classification models using deep learning (LSTM and BiLSTM) and achieved a 0.49 F1-score for both models.  We will publicly release the dataset, source code, and models with a permissive license.

Challenges of Amharic Hate Speech Data Annotation Using Yandex Toloka Crowdsourcing Platform

In this work, we build a Question classification (QC) dataset from a social media platform, namely the Telegram public channel called @AskAnythingEthiopia. The platform allows asking questions that belong to various domains, like Politics, Music, Technology, Religion and so on. Questions are posted in Amharic, English, or Amharic in Latin script. Since the questions are posed in a mixed-code, we apply different strategies to pre-process the dataset. As part of the pre-processing tools, we build a Latin-to-Ethiopic-Script transliteration tool. We collect 8k Amharic and 24K Amharic but written in Latin script questions and develop deep learning-based question answering classifiers that attain an F-score of 57.79 in 20 different question categories. The datasets and pre-processing scripts are open-sourced to facilitate further research on the Amharic community-based question answering.

Question Answering Classification for Amharic Social Media Community Based Questions

Amharic is the second most spoken Semitic language after Arabic and serves as the
official working language of Ethiopia. While Amharic NLP research is getting wider
attentions recently, the main bottleneck is that the resources and related tools are not publicly released, which makes it still a low-resource language. Due to this reason, we observe that different researchers try to repeat the same NLP research again and again. In this work, we investigate the existing approach in Amharic NLP and take the first step to publicly release tools, datasets, and models to advance Amharic NLP research. We build Python-based preprocessing tools for Amharic (tokenizer, sentence segmenter, and text cleaner) that can easily be used and integrated for the development of NLP applications. Furthermore, we compiled the first moderately large-scale Amharic text corpus (6.8m sentences) along with the word2Vec, fastText, RoBERTa, and FLAIR embeddings models. Finally, we compile benchmark datasets and build classification models for the named entity recognition task.

## Welcome to 2024 Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics!
This year, the conference is in Mexico City. NAACL was actually already planned for Mexico City in 2021, but due to the pandemic the entire conference was moved online. This year, finally, we get to go! So it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to Mexico City, whether in person or virtually. Having the conference in Mexico City is a good opportunity to emphasize that NAACL is our flagship conference for ACL members not only in North America but also in Central and South America, even though NAACL has been bearing “North” in its name. At this year’s conference, we have a theme to match, with a theme track on the Languages of Latin America to showcase the linguistic diversity of the region.
 
The opportunity to present at NAACL should not depend on a researcher’s travel budget, or their family status. This is why it is so important to make virtual participation at NAACL as good an experience as possible – but we want to also provide a good experience for in-person participants. As a community, we are still working out the best way to do that. This year at NAACL, we are trying out a big virtual poster session ahead of the conference, with the hope that this will make make for a lively and interactive experience. At the same time, we are reducing virtual oral presentations, which seem to be particularly tricky to make to work well. A big thanks to the NAACL program chairs and to Luciana Benotti for all their ideas and work to improve the virtual experience. And participants, virtual as well as in-person: Please let us know what worked for you and what didn’t, so we can continue to improve hybrid conferences. 
 
I have been lucky to work with many amazing people. Without their insight, dedication and patience, and without the many hours of work they put in, NAACL would not have been possible. A huge thank you to the program chairs Helena Gomez, Kevin Duh, and Steve Bethard – you are the best!

Continuing its mission of expanding and involving the science community of all European countries, EACL had selected the Ukrainian community for the 16th EACL, which took place online due to the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately, the ongoing war made the organisation in Kyiv impossible. Considering the importance of physical interaction among researchers, especially after the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic, in addition to an online mode, the conference will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 2 to 6 of May, 2023. ## Welcome to EMNLP 2022!
I am delighted to welcome you to EMNLP 2022! I believe this conference has been complicated beyond any precedent. Over the past year, it’s been thrilling to see the organization team approach each new puzzle with creativity and enthusiasm. We hope that those participating in Abu Dhabi as well as those joining remotely will leave the conference feeling newly inspired by the program and newly connected to our ever-growing community. Following EMNLP 2021 and major NLP conferences since, EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid,” serving both virtual and in-person participants.

Our key innovations for EMNLP 2022 include:

* EMNLP 2022 is “hybrid” in a second sense, as well: we allowed both direct and rolling review paper submissions, building on the pilot experiment of EMNLP 2021, which considered a small number of ARR submissions. 
* Familiar from NAACL but new to EMNLP, we’ve added an industry track.
* During the conference, “portals” will link virtual poster sessions to in-person conference participants during poster sessions each day.
* The first ACL-family conference in the United Arab Emirates.

W14: The Fifth Widening NLP Workshop (WiNLP 2021)

EMNLP 2021 is planned to be a hybrid event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with both on-site and fully virtual participation possible. The experience for on-site participants would closely approximate a normal pre-COVID *ACL conference, with 5-6 thematically organized parallel sessions and live Q/A and interactive discussion immediately after the talks. Presentations by virtual participants will be equitably interleaved with those of on-site participants, projected on the auditorium screens as if on-site, and also followed immediately by live Q/A and interactive discussion at a time during reasonable waking hours for the virtual presenter. For all participants, on-site and virtual, who are unable to attend a session due to either time-zone issues or because they are participating in another session live, talk recordings and slides will be available online at a minimum after the live presentation (and in many cases before as well), and questions may be submitted in advance on session-specific discussion boards and answered live in session with the usual visual aids if desired.
