SHORT BIO
James Covington is a Professor of Electronic Engineering in the School of Engineering, University of Warwick. He undertook his PhD in CMOS and SOI CMOS gas sensors developing low power MEMS micro-hot plate technology at Warwick University, before moving to Cambridge University for a post-doctoral position. In 2001 he was appointed as an academic at Warwick University and was promoted to Professor in 2018. He has spent his academic career developing chemical and biological sensors for detecting a variety of environmental pollutants and biological agents. He setup the Biomedical Sensors Laboratory in 2010, to apply gas analysis techniques to the medical arena. This dedicated facility is focussed on the analysis of potential gas phase biomarkers that emanate from human waste. This work has resulted in several patents that have been licensed to several companies. He receives extensive funding from UKRI, EU, charities and industry and has commercialised several gas sensors and sensors systems. He received a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research fellowship in 2017 and currently holds the presidency of the International Society for Chemical Sensors.
