SHORT BIO

" orcid.org/0000-0002-3500-9617 Maria Gavrilo graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Saint Petersburg State University in 1984. Majoring in ornithology and ecology in polar regions, mostly in the marine Arctic. Maria has extended field experience being participated in more than 50 polar expeditions as a scientist and scientific leader. During her research work in the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and National Park Russian Arctic she accumulated massive amount of material on contemporary state of seabird and marine mammal populations, and environment in polar regions, human impact on marine ecosystems. In 2014 she established a project Open Ocean aiming at study and conservation of the marine heritage in the remote Arctic coastal areas. Maria took part as a field biologist and leader in more than 50 expeditions (on board vessels and aircrafts, stationary and on feet) into the Arctic from Svalbard to the Chukchi Sea, Antarctic and Southern Ocean, Baltic Sea and Russian North-West. She shares her experience participating regularly in conferences and meetings dealing with geography, ornithology, marine ecology, specially protected areas, history of Arctic exploration and Arctic marine heritage. The latest field of interest is the current state of the population, migration and habitats of the rare and endangered arctic seabird, the Ivory Gull, as well as plastic pollution in the Arctic sea and seabirds. Maria is an author and editor of books, many reports and a series of biodiversity maps. She published over 300 works. Maria is national representative to the Circumpolar seabird group of the CAFF. "
