Decision making under uncertainty in dynamic environments is a fundamental AI problem in which agents need to determine which decisions (or actions) to make at each time step to maximise their expected utility. Dynamic decision networks (DDNs) are an extension of dynamic Bayesian networks with decisions and utilities. DDNs can be used to compactly represent Markov decision processes (MDPs). We propose a novel algorithm called mapl-cirup that leverages knowledge compilation techniques developed for (dynamic) Bayesian networks to perform inference and gradient-based learning in DDNs. Specifically, we knowledge-compile the Bellman update present in DDNs into dynamic decision circuits and evaluate them within an (algebraic) model counting framework. In contrast to other exact symbolic MDP approaches, we obtain differentiable circuits that enable gradient-based parameter learning.

While solving math word problems automatically has received considerable attention in the NLP community, few works have addressed probability word problems specifically. In this paper, we employ and analyse various neural models for answering such word problems. In a two-step approach, the problem text is first mapped to a formal representation in a declarative language using a sequence-to-sequence model, and then the resulting representation is executed using a probabilistic programming system to provide the answer. Our best performing model incorporates general-domain contextualised word representations that were finetuned using transfer learning on another in-domain dataset. We also apply end-to-end models to this task, which bring out the importance of the two-step approach in obtaining correct solutions to probability problems.

Mapping probability word problems to executable representations

Designers increasingly rely on procedural generation for automatic generation of content in various industries. These techniques require extensive knowledge of the desired content, and about how to actually implement such procedural methods. Algorithms for learning interpretable generative models from example content could alleviate both difficulties. We propose SIGI, a novel method for inferring shapes and inducing a shape grammar from grid-based 3D building examples. This interpretable grammar is well-suited for co-creative design. Applied to Minecraft buildings, we show how the shape grammar can be used to automatically generate new buildings in a similar style.

Virtual Poster Session I: Question Answering

EMNLP 2021 is planned to be a hybrid event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with both on-site and fully virtual participation possible. The experience for on-site participants would closely approximate a normal pre-COVID *ACL conference, with 5-6 thematically organized parallel sessions and live Q/A and interactive discussion immediately after the talks. Presentations by virtual participants will be equitably interleaved with those of on-site participants, projected on the auditorium screens as if on-site, and also followed immediately by live Q/A and interactive discussion at a time during reasonable waking hours for the virtual presenter. For all participants, on-site and virtual, who are unable to attend a session due to either time-zone issues or because they are participating in another session live, talk recordings and slides will be available online at a minimum after the live presentation (and in many cases before as well), and questions may be submitted in advance on session-specific discussion boards and answered live in session with the usual visual aids if desired.

Computational creativity is an interdisciplinary endeavor that is located at the intersection of the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, philosophy, social sciences and the arts. The goal of computational creativity is to model, simulate or replicate creativity using a computer, to achieve one of several ends:

* to construct a program or computer capable of showing some level of creativity
* to better understand human creativity and to formulate an algorithmic perspective on creative behavior in humans
* to design programs that can enhance human creativity without necessarily being creative themselves

<br>The ICCC conference series organized by the [**Association for Computational Creativity**](https://computationalcreativity.net/) since 2010 is the only scientific conference that focuses on computational creativity alone and also covers all aspects of it.
