SHORT BIO

I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Krembil Brain Institute (part of the University Health Network and affiliated with the University of Toronto), working under the primary supervision of Dr. Taufik Valiante and co-supervised by Dr. Frances Skinner and Dr. Jeremie Lefebvre. Additionally, I am the "Team Leader" of the new computational grouping of Dr. Valiante's "Neuron to Brain Lab", with responsibilities including recruiting and training students, developing collaborative opportunities, and pursuing funding for the lab's computational investigations.

My research is focused on deciphering the multi-scale nature of seizure onset in patients with epilepsy, with a focus on investigating novel mechanisms for seizure initiation that might motivate new treatments for the approximately one-third of patients with epilepsy for whom current pharmacological intervention is ineffective. Such research includes studying the role of inhibitory interneurons in seizure onset and, more recently, the role of neural heterogeneity in imparting seizure resiliency. This work benefits tremendously by the rare access to data from live human cortical tissue afforded by the relationship between the Krembil and Toronto Western Hospital, as well as Dr. Valiante's status as a neurosurgeon and clinician-scientist. The tools generated in my work encompass a wide range of spatial scales, from the detailed study of micro-scale, biophysically detailed models of human neurons to mathematical analysis of the influence of neurostimulation on more macro-scale neural networks.
