SHORT BIO

"Thomas Schaaf is a Principal Research Scientist at 3M | M*Modal. His research focus is Automatic Speech Recognition and Natural Language Understanding. He received his Dr. Ing. from the Universität Karlsruhe in 2004 and worked at Sony, Carnegie Mellon University, Toshiba, Amazon, M*Modal. He joined 3M in 2019 through the acquisition of M*Modal. There he researches on the understanding of patient doctor conversations with the goal reducing the burden of the documentation process on doctors and create more time to care. He is also Adjunct Faculty at the Language Technology Institute of Carnegie Melon University. Anna is an independent user experience designer and researcher who finds joy in helping multi-disciplinary teams create opportunities for rewarding human-technology collaborations. She is interested in multimodal product ecosystems, graceful human-computer interactions, and thoughtful applications of artificial intelligence. In addition to helping clients like 3M | M*Modal, Anna teaches part-time at the Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute and co-chairs the Pittsburgh chapter of the Interaction Design Association. Anna holds a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and Informatics from the Russian-Armenian State University."
