Welcome to our annual conference, a gathering where the knowledge of our scientific communities share what they have researched since we last met. If it is your first time attending, then thank you for stepping into our world! If you are a returning guest, then thank you for coming back! Whether you are attending for the first or the fourteenth, we treasure your trust in what we have to offer. We promise to make it worth your while.

As in years past, we have put together an energetic collection of seminars, deeper dives, speeches, posters, and workshops to whet your appetite for learning. 

We are delighted that you have chosen to attend the 2023 Annual Understanding Interventions (UI) Conference, in partnership with the NSF Centers for Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) Program. 

### About the Conference 
This conference was established to facilitate dissemination and exchange of hypothesis-based research on interventions and initiatives that broaden participation in science and engineering research careers. The conference is designed to create a dialogue among behavioral/social science and education researchers, evaluators, and faculty in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields who participate in intervention programs. Workshops, sessions, and posters will communicate effective strategies from successful STEM intervention programs, present results from empirical research studies, and synthesize the translation of research findings into practice on STEM learning, undergraduate research, graduate education, and student retention.

The Implementation Science and Evaluation of Mentorship NetworksMentoring Up: Expanding and Strengthening Your Mentoring Relationship

**Description** 1. Historically Black Colleges and Universities - Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), which provides awards to strengthen STEM undergraduate education and research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). 
 2. Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program), which supports projects that improve undergraduate STEM education and increase the rates of recruitment, retention and graduation of undergraduate STEM students at Hispanic-serving institutions.
 3. Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program, which assist universities and colleges in diversifying the nation's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce by increasing the number of STEM baccalaureate and graduate degrees awarded to populations historically underrepresented in these disciplines.

Broadening Participation Panel

This session will provide information about the NSF programs focused on intersectional equity and sustainable, systemic change in institutions of higher education. The ADVANCE program (Organizational Change for Gender Equity in STEM Academic Professions, solicitation 20-554) supports systemic change projects to enhance intersectional gender equity and inclusion for STEM faculty. The AGEP program (Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, solicitation 21-576) supports alliances among institutions of higher education to design and implement strategies that increase the number of historically underrepresented STEM faculty and promote systemic change.

NSF AGEP and ADVANCE Programs

Mid-Career Advancement (MCA) Session

The NSF EDU Racial Equity in STEM Education activity funds bold and transformative work that addresses systemic racism and advances racial equity in STEM education and the STEM workforce. In this session, Drs. Toya Frank and Chrystal Smith, co-leads of Racial Equity in STEM Education will provide an introduction and overview of the directorate-wide activity. The workshop will address the foci of the proposals submitted and awarded, general submission information, specific solicitation criteria, and considerations for budgets. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback about general questions.

Helpful Hints and Tips for Successful Post Award Grant Management

In this talk, we explore some of the findings of NSF funded “Studying Successful Doctoral Students in Mathematics from Underrepresented Groups.” In this study, 75 people of color at various stages of graduate school in the mathematical sciences, ranging from just beginning, to just finishing, were interviewed about their experiences. We will reflect on their experiences with select quotes and glean some important lessons from the results including the need for proper mentoring and policies that clarify steps to success. We will provide general practices on recruitment and retention
