PFAS has been used as lubricants in industrial processing, on machinery, clothing, and directly on food contact materials for waterproofing and grease-proofing qualities. Recently it has been discovered that PFAS may migrate from those materials into the product contained within and thus may be consumed. Understanding the risks associated with migration of PFAS from packaging into the body is essential. As the need for testing of source material becomes more evident, standardization bodies are working towards solutions. The AOAC draft SMPR® for PFAS in FCM is now available for public comment, and standard methods through ASTM are being developed concurrently to tackle this issue. New matrices need to be considered, and new innovations allow researchers to detect smaller quantities, faster, and with less laboratory waste. As we learn new information on the health implications of different types of PFAS, we present a method for PFAS quantitation in paper, plastics, cosmetics, and fabrics being developed with ASTM’s F15 consumer products group.  With this procedure, PFAS was extracted from these everyday items like nonstick foil, athletic tape, and stain-resistant dress shirts using a solid-liquid extraction followed by analysis on an LCMS-8060NX. This method demonstrates a calibration range from 5-200 ng/L for most compounds, and 50-1000 ng/L for select compounds for a total of 46 PFAS and 25 surrogates. 84% of compounds at the lowest spike level for nonstick foil had average recoveries within 90-130% and over 90% of them had RSD below 20%.
