As the cannabis industry continues to expand, the safety of infused edibles and ingested products is gaining increased attention. Unlike commercial food products, however, there are no consistent microbial testing requirements for cannabis edibles, leading to confusion and potential safety concerns. While federal regulations set clear microbial limits for commercial food products, no uniform standards exist for cannabis food products as cannabis is still not legal at the federal level. As such, states are left to establish their own thresholds, which can create variability, for example, in limits for infused products (such as gummies and chocolates) versus ingested concentrates (such as RSO and tinctures). Remediation techniques such as irradiation and chemical treatments further add to the complication, as these also lack standardized guidelines. While the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends symbols for remediated/irradiated food, these practices are inconsistently applied to cannabis products. Additionally, hemp-derived products regulated by the National Industrial Hemp Council (NIHC) currently have no established microbial limits, although some verification programs impose partial safeguards. This presentation will explore the key differences between microbial testing for cannabis edibles and commercial food products. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the challenges involved in establishing consistent safety standards, the impact of varying state regulations, and the need for a unified approach to ensure consumer safety in the cannabis edibles market.
