For institutions that have existing programs in Global Engineering or related areas (e.g. Humanitarian Engineering, Peace Engineering), we have collected basic program information from the faculty who are participating in the workshop. Representatives from UC Berkeley, MIT, University of South Florida and Colorado School of Mines will be giving lightning talks on their programs. Please review this document for an overview of the existing programs and their approach to global engineering education.

**Speaker:** Evan Thomas

**Evan Thomas Bio:**

Evan Thomas is the Director of the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and the Global Engineering Residential Academic Program, and holds the Mortenson Endowed Chair in Global Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is a tenured Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Departments, and an affiliate faculty in Environmental and Occupational Health at the Colorado School of Public Health. Evan is currently a member of the NASA and USAID SERVIR Applied Sciences Team, a member of the board of the Millennium Water Alliance, and Co-Chair of the ASME Engineering for Global Development Research Committee. 

Evan has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder, is a registered Professional Engineer, and has a Masters in Public Health from the Oregon Health and Science University. 

Evan’s technical background is in water and air testing and treatment applied in developing communities through to operational spacecraft. He founded SweetSense Inc. which is supported by USAID and the National Science Foundation to develop and apply satellite connected sensors monitoring drinking water services. Daily, the team is monitoring millions of people’s water supplies across east Africa.

Evan’s research has been funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the World Bank, USAID, the UN Foundation, the CDC, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, the Gates Foundation, and others.

As Chief Operating Officer of DelAgua Health from 2012-2016, Evan conceived, designed and directed a $25 million dollar public health intervention in Rwanda with the Government of Rwanda. The program reached 350,000 households with cookstoves and 102,000 households with water filters, in over 7,500 villages and 1.6 million people. 

Evan was previously an Associate Professor at Portland State University and Oregon Health & Science University from 2010-2018 (asst prof. 2010-2016) founder of the SweetLab, and founding director of GlobalPDX. 

Evan was a civil servant at the NASA-Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas from 2004-2010. At NASA, Evan was a aerospace engineer working on microgravity fluid management technologies and water recovery systems for spacecraft hardware flying on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station.

Conversation with Jack Colford, How do academic institutions prepare students to be practitioners in an emerging field?

**Jack Colford Bio:**

Jack Colford, MD PhD is a Professor of Epidemiology at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.  Jack attended medical school at Johns Hopkins and then completed an Internal Medicine residency, a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and a separate NIH fellowship in HIV/AIDS at UC San Francisco before completing a PhD in Epidemiology at UC Berkeley.  He served as the Chief Medical Resident at Stanford and has received clinical and classroom teaching awards at UC San Francisco, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.  He was a Visiting Scientist in the Water and Sanitation group while on sabbatical at WHO Geneva.        
     Jack has been the Principal Investigator for numerous large-scale, randomized field trials and observational studies evaluating the impact of water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition interventions in India, Bolivia, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Kenya, Mexico, and the United States.  He has co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications.  He is the coordinating PI of the WASH Benefits trials (washbenefits.net).  His projects have been supported by the NIH through four separate R01 awards,  separate R03 and R21 awards, multiple Gates Foundation awards, and funding from the CDC, the World Bank, and the USEPA. All of his work involves large teams of interdisciplinary investigators, including colleagues from Engineering, Public Policy, Economics, molecular biology and microbiology.       
     Jack is the faculty director of the UC Berkeley Online MPH Program and teaches three online Epidemiology courses in addition to his regular campus courses on Epidemiologic Methods, Global Health, and the design of randomized clinical and impact evaluation trials.  He has also taught Epidemiology during the summer in the MPH Program at the University of Zurich for the last 20 years.

Welcome to Part I of the two-part, online workshop series on Aligning Global Engineering Graduate Program Priorities, funded by the National Science Foundation. The focus of Part I will be on the following questions:

What is Global Engineering? What do global engineers need to know and know how to do?

How do we achieve these learning objectives through graduate education? 

The goal of this workshop is to generate consensus on a Body of Knowledge within the emerging field of Global Engineering, working together to: (i) develop and align learning objectives and graduate curricula programming and (ii) strengthen collaboration amongst Global Engineering and other related programs in the United States.
