Workshop: Virtual Reality Tours of the 3SRP “Long-Term Care Group Home” robot test site.

Date:
Thursday August 12, 2021

3 Tour Times: 7-8am, 8-9am, and 9-10am PDT

Workshop Prerequisites:

The workshop will use Zoom to welcome and brief attendees on the virtual tour's main highlights. After the introduction, the attendees will be invited to join the virtual tour of the 3Spheres™ Robotics project (3SRP) “long-term care group home” robot testing environment. These virtual tours will be offered in three modalities, ranked from most immersive to leaset immersive as follows:

  1. 3D, immersive virtual reality (VR); requires an Oculus compatible stand-alone headset,
  2. 3D desktop, immersive VR; requires a PC with a compatible VR Headset
  3. 2D desktop, non-immersive VR; requires a PC or MAC that meets the minimum system requirements.

Workshop Details:

Join us for a Virtual Reality (VR) Tour of the 3SRP “long-term care group home” robot testing environment! Our robot AETHER™ and its makers look forward to sharing our unique response to the COVID-19 pandemic that offers many additional solutions to the challenges of testing robot-human interaction in long-term healthcare environments for people with developmental disabilities and older adults.

As you progress through the VR Tour, you will experience a digital replica of a real long-term care group home, operated by the Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA), for people with developmental disabilities.

)

During the tour, an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide, and member of the 3SRP research team, will share unique insights into:

  • The VR environment, including accessibility, textures, fidelity, avatars and the various technologies and tools available for creating 3D robot testing environments.

  • AETHER™ the Robot, including 3D rendering of the robot, virtual sensors, use cases, robot commands, ROS compatibility, 3D Printing and the evolution of the robot design

  • DDA and the impact of COVID-19, including the main long-term care problems to be solved with robots, the impact of COVID health restrictions and the application of user-centered industrial design.

  • Simulations in the VR environment, including drivers for sensors, autonomous robot navigation and SLAM in the virtual space, testing scenarios using avatar simulations for safety inspections, hazard detection, personal hygiene procedures and unexpected falls by residents.

About the 3Spheres™ Robotics Project

We are a partnership of organizations that represent all spheres of JDQ’s 3Spheres of Reciprocity model. 3Spheres is a philosophy and model for healthy, optimal, and successful community engagement. It is a paradigm for social responsibility and cooperative, mutually beneficial relationships grown from the fundamental understanding that only through the symbiosis of the spheres of Helping, Profiting and Learning can we all thrive. It reflects our obligation to maximize positive impact and minimize negative impact on society. It expresses our values of mutualism, respect & equality.

The 3Spheres Robotics Project includes:

  • non-profits that provide long-term care for people with developmental disabilities and older adults
  • for-profits the have managed and successfully delivered custom technology projects for over 20 years
  • researchers, mostly at the PhD and Post-Doc level, that are paid to delve into their favourite robotics field of study
  • funders that recognize and value investments that have a high potential for ROI and a strong social investment in their community

Aether, our collaborative service robot, is intended for staff and residents working and living in group homes for people with developmental disabilities and medium sized care facilities for older adults, who need help to gain and keep their independence, safety, privacy and happiness. Unlike alternative personal assistants like Life Line, Alexa, and Siri, Aether integrates autonomous navigation with client monitoring and social interaction.
